Some do, some don't. I know for a fact that Gateway will still support the machine if you add new hardware.

          Re: eMachines not so bad?

          I checked eMachines website...it's a socket939 2.2ghz
left side system Lookup, select T-6420, click GO

I downloaded his manual...verified has 4 ram slots

I found his mobo at MSI website...answered the rest of the questions...
here is your mobo if you ever choose to find software upgrades for it:

If everything is correct, it came with a single 1024mb ram module? Great news for you if true...another 1024 module in the future would do you great justice.

As for that video card, honestly you should return it to Best Buy immediately(within 2 weeks of purchase), for a full refund and buy an x1600XT from NewEgg for exactly the same price you spent after tax, maybe cheaper!!!!!

          Sapphire version: $155

          PowerColor version: $169($159 after rebate)

The only drawback I see with this computer purchase(my first comp was an eMachines, it was fine), is the 300watt power supply(open case, look at sticker).
It is sufficient for the card you have now, and "might" squeek by with an 1600XT(though I would still buy another PSU for future card).

Nothing wrong with your system once you get a good card(with PSU), and an extra 1024 module later on. If you do get another 1024 ram module, it will be the last ram upgrade you ever have to do, which leaves only a new PSU and video card and your system will have maxed itself.

If you ignore the incredibly perfect advise of getting a 1600XT in place of the 1300 for the same price(shudder to think you wouldn't)..then no need for a new PSU until your next video card a year or so from now.

Once you do these simple upgrades yourself, you will have learned how to build your own NEXT TIME. You did fine, it will be a great PC for you if it doesn't break down. Mine is still going 2.4 years later...friend has it now.

            Re: eMachines not so bad?

I got a couple of e-machines a couple of years ago for work, for the money they were ideal.
I had serious issues with the one i ended up using, kept randomly restarting and crashing...... upon voiding my warrenty i discovered the cpu heat sink was only half clipped on and the fan was swinging freely in the case, fan gave up the ghost soon after. The other machine was fine though but theres always gonna be one bad egg in a batch.

                        That means you counted wrong.

Can't you check the pins by going into device manager?
