There will be no more single core FX. There will be no more FX released on socket 939. There will be dual/quad core FX released on socket AM2. The only major improvements in chipsets on the 939 platform will likely be from ATI.

AM2 will have a few single core processors, but mostly dual core. It will have a bus of 333mhz (333 x 3 LDT) so the effective HTT will still be 1000mhz x 2. It will also natively support DDR2 667. It will also add support for quad cores and other things to come.

I just did some quick math and:
The tyan board I posted earlier-$400
      2x265 Opteron-$700 for both

There ya go, a mobo and a quad cores for the same price as a fx-60, sans anything else. I really hope you listen, this will give you a crapload more power than the fx, with more upgradability down the line.

I guess i ll just wait for AM2 then. Becuase it will have DD2 support, 64 bit CPU, dual core, everything all together. I guess the FX-62 will cost like $1400 or more. If that happens, i will have to wait 2 more months but it will be worth waiting, i wont have any questions in my mind. Thanks for the info.

Oh btw, someone said in this thread that AM2 will be released withing the next 4 months, but youa re saying this month? Which one is more accurate?

You do sound good, but i have never heard of tyan boards before. I made some mistakes in the past by buying Gigabyte, abit, intel boards and i will never make that mistake again. Since the day i bought my first computer 15 years ago, ASUS has been the #1 motherboard manufacturer in the entire world. I'd rather pay $50 more and buy ASUS than buying some unknown new motherboard. If there is an ASUS motherboard that has the same feature, let me know.

Btw, does that board handle 8 GB of RAM or am i imagining things?

It can handle 16gb. Tyan makes extremely stable proffesional server and 940 opteron boards, and I've never heard of a single complaint. To my knowledge there are about 3 (maybe 4) other companies that make this kind of board.

gee wiz, been away from hardware world for 10 months, and all this AM2, dual core, opteron, and every other thing.... And i usually consider myself knowledgeable with computers but i guess designing circuits or researching computer microarchitecture doesn't mean much when it comes to gaming rigs:p

AM2 was supposed to be release in Q1. I've heard rumors of it's delay until Q2. Time will tell.

Re: Planning on building a new computer and selling the old one

I have to ask why on earth you're going to build a computer that will be able to play all the newest games for the next 2-3 years when you only have 1-1.5 years left.

Why not just buy a computer that can handle what you play now, then just upgrade parts down the line? You're going to pay more now for the latest stuff like the newest graphics card that will play every game at twice the cut off frame rate the visible eye can detect.

Your current computer can play BF2 at highest settings at above what your eye can detect for a frame rate, and you're wanting to blow money on making a faster PC?

You're going to be spending 25-50% more for items that are just coming out that won't even have a use. Get 2GB of ram and get another 2 when the time comes and the next 2GB are cheaper and going to do you some good.

If this is to have an enlarged E-penis then by all means get an FX60 with 2x7800GTX/512 or the upcoming 7900 series so you can get those extra 40fps past what you can see with your naked eye. If you want to build something to last you 1.5 years then save yourself some money and buy a better monitor or TV, movies, music, games, etc.

Re: Planning on building a new computer and selling the old one

Regarding to what you are saying about FX-60 and 4800+. I would go on and on for pages here the difference between the two. There is a lot. The architecture, memory modules, registers, ALUs, data paths, and tons of other things. 4800+ might have the same core with FX-60, but there is a lot more than the core in the CPU. There is a reason why FX-60 costs $400 more than 4800+ which i just found for $600. Yes there may be "overpricing" factor, of course there is, this is how AMD makes money, but not much, maybe $100 or maybe $150, the rest is worth.
yes there is a reason, and this reason is called marketing.

Do not believe what they say about the FX series, they are just made pure for marketing, only thing that could be is that they are the result of better yields.

For example, my 4000+ is slightly OC'd , and in benchmark progs I get better results then the FX-55 .

But if you want to waste some money on some FX series, while you can get the same performance from another CPU, it's your call .

Start reading sites a tomshardware and anandtech , they are good and professional reviewers

alright, i am reading anandtech right now, and this review shows that FX-60 (and 57) is a lot better than 4800+ ( i m not even comparing it with 4000+). This is both windows applications and in games. In applications fx-60 is better than 57, in games 57 is better (especially in BF2 and unreal). Here is the link:

You know what you are saying is similar to this:

"Maranello, instead of buying a brand new M3 with 340 hp, why don't you buy a 1 year old 3.30 Coupe modified with 280 hp, you are not gonna use that hp anyway in any road because of the 60mph speed limit (this is for the guy who says the human eye can't detect fps difference after some point)"

This is what you are saying There is something called "image" or the "title" some people pay for? And in 24 years of my life i haven't done it but after working my a$$ off while going the school for 6 years, i think i deserve to buy something for the first time for its name

With your reasoning, i shouldnt even buy a new CPU at all!!! My current computer runs flawlessly. I can do whatever i want to do , i can run all games, bf2, hl2, fear, doom3, quake 4 with the highest settings with max AA and AF and get great fps.

With your reasoning, people shouldn't play golf to relax since its expansive and its all waste of money, instead they should play tennis if they want to be a part of elite sports community or basketball in the street if not

You see where i am going to? :) I bet you do

Im not seeing where the FX 57 is really better at anything including games.

                        Battlefield 2: FX57 by 1.5 fps

                        COD 2: FX57 by 0.6 fps

                        Quake 4: FX60 by 39.4 fps

Quake 4 has an SMP patch for dual cores. That is a preview of the future of gaming.

that's what i said. I said fx-60 is better in windows applications, fx-57 is better in gaming. 4800+ is never better than the two under any circumstances.

I'm saying the FX 57 isn't really better at gaming.

I see exactly where you're going... but you could spend the money elsewhere, or give it to charity and save a starving baby. Getting an E46 M3 is better than getting a tuned E36 because its faster right out of the box. The comparison has some credence but in practical terms it'd be like upgrading from an E36 to an E46 M3 for the sole reason that you want to make sure you beat a stock Honda Civic. Both will do the job fine, one is cheaper and more practical.

I see where just knowing you can tackle anything is good, but your system can do what you need now. Why not wait until the prices on the hardware that will keep your system afloat for 2 more years is 50% less than it is now. In the interim your system will handle everything. Heck, buy a new TV or something if the cash burning holes in your pockets.
