You actually used thermal adhesive on your video card??? They say in a disclaimer where you buy it and it should be on the tube, saying that it permanently bonds whatever you apply it to...

There's a time period, where true, I wouldn't tamper with warrenty aspects of expensive hardware. But Considering his history here and his computer in general, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing, and made a calculated risk. Although I have NO idea why everythings falling apart for him now heh.

Not to laugh. I'm not saying it's funny at all. I'm going though similiar trouble with my own system. Point is, I guess, that simply; these things happen. Although it's a pain in the butt and a horrible experience, it sounds like he can afford to fix the problem (even if he'd rather not have to!), which probably came into tally with the calculated risk.

For example: I just bought a very sexy and spec wise, puportedly kick@ss psu. But there's a warrenty sticker right on it's shiny blue surface that I don't plan on removing for a good couple of months. Course, as soon as I remove it, a special sensor inside the psu will activate and self destruct the entire unit. Sorta like when you remove the tag on a pillow and the feathers release previously dormant avian flu spores. These things just HAPPEN.

Meanwhile, you'll battle you're computer and I'll battle mine. I'm currently trying to save my current settup by getting an aftermarket cpu heat sink (looking at the Scythe Ninja), heatsinks for my north and south bridge (south doesnt even have one right now, and gets VERY hot), and might introduce a 120mm fan to my side window... as well as replacing my 4 month old processor with a faster one, and possibly even simply giving up and moving onto computer #2 with a dual core processor, sli 7800gtx, liquid cooling, and fining myself in your position before the year is up, then throwing my computer out the window and moving into a cave to research ant mating behaviors and try to rediscover FIRE.

Yes I did use thermal adhesive, and I knew it was permanent. My card is (was) liquid cooled, and thermal tape on the ramsinks just wasn't doing the job for the memory cooling. When I did this the card has been working fine for 3 months or so, so I figured since I usually upgrade every 9 months or so that I would be good for another 6 months. That just puts me ahead in my upgrade cycles.

I got an RMA authorization from newegg, for the RMA you have to have the stock heatsink on. Ramsinks won't come off (without pulling the ram off), stock heatsink won't go on without ramsinks off.

Luckily I'm getting a decent tax refund so I"ll probably pick up a GTX or somthing.

Like I said, not without pulling the ram chip off. I even have the arctic clean stuff, and it wouldn't budge them.

jeez, just shows what happens when you tinker with everything on your comp, but then say that you know everything, and call others idiots for saying that you shouldnt.

it seems like a natural consequence, and the best way to teach people that perhaps they SHOULDNT f*** around with their computers, and that they maybe DONT know everything about what could happen to their expensive super rig.

like really, these people spend thousands on computers basically to play just BF2 and very few other games, but if EA charged 50 bucks for the 1.2 patch for instance theyd cry bloody murder. just makes no sense

I never clamed to know everything. Also I knew when I put the adhesive on it would be permanant. Like said above it was a calculated risk. I still stand by my desicion, and wouldn't have done it any diffrently in hindsight.

Tinkering with computers is my hobby. I know something can go wrong every time I open my computer up, it's part of the game.

We all have our hobbys, if you don't like mine so what, I do...

Yes I'm quite sure it's damaged.

For EVGAs warranty you have to be able to get the stock heatsink back on, and is doesn't cover physicaldamage.

That makes no sense, It doesn't matter if you have a super leet computer, or a store bought $600 piece of crap. I gaurantee there is less problems with high PC's compared to pre-build bundled deals. You don't hear as much from Dell, HP, Gateway, Sony, or E-Machines because it is at a much larger scale. 10% of all retail computer's come back to the manufacturer. Either from hardware failure or bad installation. Most consumers deal with this through the manufacturer and not through store's, and most get PC's that are rma'd back to them that are fine. Most aftermarket high end PC products sold are given to those who know what is going on and have a need for great products. This is a small % of computer user's as a whole. Your guess is as good as mine the % of people who install these parts and whether or not they know what their doing. A small % of them incure issues out of their control, such as Little Jimmy Norton, who is pretty freakin knowledgable when it comes to PC's.
