If you want to run high textures, youd want 1.5+ of ram. My 6600gt can handle high textures video card wise.

SFR-Maine, just curious, what drivers are you using for your 6600gt? With my 6600gt @ 550/1100 I can only get about 3900 on 3dmark05. I have 3ghz P4 and 1 1/2 gigs of ram.

that score is old, but is the highest i have reached on 3dmark 05, which was back on an older version of the nvidia drivers i forget which ones, but now i can not break the 4000 mark on the newer nvida drivers. Also i do not have my card overcloked anymore (was causing BF2 problems) i will try some overclocking this weekend and see what i can come up with.

Well i have done some Overclocking on my 6600GT and was to my suprixe break the 4000 mark!

a good idea to solve your heat problems (only temporary)

take the side panel off your case and stick a desk fan next to the opened panel

its quite noisy and irritating so i would reccomend you get some cooling but it helped me once when i was getting artifcats

Go with the 6800GS. I upgraded from a 6600GT 128 to 6800GT (approx same performance as GS) and it made a hell of a difference. You should be able to overclock the core to 400 and memory to 1.05/1.1 without a problem.
Add another in six or so months and you hopefully will still be playing new releases at high settings. Presumably with an A64 3500+, you're running dual channel ram? If so, it's not a good idea adding another 512mb, dual channel won't work with three sticks, or two different sizes. Add another 1GB matched to the ram you already have, that will make a big difference to loading times, smooth out any choppiness and generally make anything else you do seem faster.
