Right now, price/performance ratio, nVidia has the edge with the 7800GTX/Gt's. I mean, christ, I can find a good 7800GT for 300-350 USD ish, GTX 256 450-550. I don't count 512 mb cards really because of the extreme price and the fact that refreashes are around the corner...

ATI's cards are respectable yes, and with the newer drivers, its on par, but too little too late. Unless you are brand loyal, nVidia has this round, though, next year is proving to be even more competitive...

OT: For gaming and gaming alone, I do not see a reason why not go with AMD/(Insert whatever video card). The performance gap in terms of gaming, intel vs AMD wise is a big enough one. If we're talking more than gaming though, then its a debate. Still, with the heat levels and power requirements Intel's newer CPUs require (except the newer ones in 2006, which look really interesitng and may get me back to intel) is just nuts.

I won't argue stablity on a Intel though...if Intel's Memroe/Conroe cpus are on par with M2 and easy on the power/heat, then it may be a good year...

wow people love to favor Nvidia

            Connect 3D X1800 XL

            325

            Sapphire X1800 XT 512

            490

ATI has got Nvidia beat performance wise, the XT can keep up with the 512 GTX pretty well for the almost $300 price difference, also the XT can flash w/ an XTPE bios to run at 700/1600 which does keep up with and even surpass the 512 GTX in some cases, as for the XL vs. GT, its pretty close stock i wouldn't say one is better than the other stock performance, but the XL's overclockability and image quality won my wallet over.

Right on, I do the same, no brainer. Never had ANY performance issues with these brands.

Hey my 6800 GT sucked, sucked at HDTV, sucked at games was not a fan of nvidia and had nvidia since the RIVA. Got the 7800 GTX 512, idiot proof installations, rocks at hdtv and GOOD LORDY THE GAMES. Can't find anything to annoy it yet. HL2 and Age of Empires 3, no slowdown at HDTV res of 1300 widescreen.

Sadley Fear and BF2 dont support HDTV widescreen res yet. So running in 1024, everything on high, no optomisations at all. No slowdown. Its cheaper to buy one XFX GTX 7800 512, then SLI 2 7800 256 GTX's. Performance wise for at least the next 6 months nothing much will annoy my machine.

AMD x2 cores are about to have there day as well both Quake 4 and Serious Sam 2 seem to use them almost properly. So even the FX 57 may not be the best gaming CPU anymore.

BF2 only reads one core. Visual C++ 2003 anyone?

poor you, missing on the good ATI stuff

                          to ATI users
Welcome to the ATI said, where your images don't shimmer and your graphics aren't optimized to make up for inferior performance. Welcome to the side where the release of new drivers offers 10-15 fps performance gains. ATI likes to get on the ball with the best image quality and the frames to back it up. Welcome to the life of video bliss, we found someone who isn't a biased nvidiot retard and realized ATI's cards are worth the 20-30 dollars more for slightly better FPS and better image quality.

Wow judging by that picture the x1800 XT blows the GTX 256 away. And its roughly the same price.(XT - 490, GTX 256 - 460)
Im starting to learn closer to ATI :O
But the GTX 512 is still on top everywhere. For the price of 700 dollars, its 1 fps increase at 1600, doesnt look too good.
Im suprised how good of a card the x1800 XT is. Id say its really good bang for your buck.
I just hope that chart is accurate.

Gah, way too many nvidia fanboys. U guys, why don't we stop just saying "NVIDIA IS BETTER" and say something more constructive. So far, M4guy has given the most, he's given us benchmarks from x-bit labs. U guys need to be more open to other people's opinion. We all know that ATI is facing some tough times. BUt what people say here is just wrong. U guys have lied about the prices of ATI cards and such.
