Re: OK ... Why AMD Not P4?

AMD is built for gaming and Intel is built more for office work although it will still work for gaming.

Not anymore. AMD now gives you more performance for each watt the cpu spends. I read an article few days ago on anadtech, I guess. Opteron consumes almost half of the power of a similar Xeon. Opteron has the same archetecture as the Athlon and Xeon has a similar one to P4. So I think Athlon consumes less power.

Also with Cool&Quite your AMD cpu temperature does not go up unless you start a demanding application like a game. actually with office applications my cpu temp is around the room temp most of the time.

The sweet thing is that with my MSI Neo4 Plat mobo I can overclock my 4000+ cpu and use Qool&Quite at the same time.

Re: OK ... Why AMD Not P4?

AMD beats intel in just about every single aspect. And that includes less heat consumption along with less watts used. Get at least an A64. If you can afford it then go with a 2x.

Here are articles on recommended power supplies along with heat consumptions of computers from people who are anal about this this type of stuff. It also explains the myths of needing 500 watts when 380 watts is all you will need. Just get a reputable psu brand. (No psu is even close to 100% efficient)

Do any goggle search for an article on an A64 vs intel4. A64 wins in almost all applications and of course gaming. IT IS EXTREMELY important you make sure you look at the date of the article.

Obviously this depends entirely on how you plan to use your machine. If you're not planning on transferring video and downloading thousands of MP3s, 80 gigs is plenty for gaming.

I would also like to reiterate the importance of a good power supply. Good does not equal high wattage, good equals stable voltage. The power supply is, afterall, the foundation of the machine. Big fluctuations in voltages will cause system instablity. Just make sure you get a known name. I'm using Antec.

Oh, one other thing, here's another vote for >=1 GIG RAM. It will also cut down on the load time of all you maps which I'm sure everyone here will attest is a BF2 annoyance.

And as far as AMD running hot, shouldn't be a problem if you don't overclock, assuming you use the recommended cooling solution.

Here is a good article that may help in your choice of CPU. It is also a good read for any BF2 player. It talks about the code that is used for BF2.

Re: OK ... Why AMD Not P4?

If you are just going to play games, go AMD
If you are planing on doing anything else with the machine, go Intel

Intel is good at multi tasking, so you can run another program while playing BF2 without slowing down as much as AMD would. On the other hand by raw performance in single thread applications AMD beats Intel.
As for dual-core cpus, again intel is more effective in certain non-gamining applications, however if I am to buy a dual-core I would go AMD.

Although, to be honest, the difference is not very noticeable, maybe 2 or 3 fps difference the most. Its your video card that determines your BF2 performance the most (unless you are using ancient CPU that lags down your VC clock)

thats a good example for a budget PC. I'm sure it will play BF2 on MED settings but if i were yo i would have spent more on the MOBO and gotten an Asus A8V from some other more prestigious MOBO manufacturer such as Gigabyte, DFI, etc.. I think i also read that Patriot ram can be unstable and cause crashes but i guess if you ran MEMTEST 88 for a day and it did not crash then your ram is ok. Getting a separate sound card was also a good idea. Onboard sound cards can take up to 30% of CPU resources which cause HUGE drops in performance.

This is what i'm getting for Xmas:

                      AMD 4800 X2
                      2GIGS of Corsair XMS
x800XL ( my weakest point but will be upgraded SOON)
                      CoolerMaster WaveMaster case
                      500W PSU
                      2x Hitachi 160Gigs in Raid 0
                      Asus A8n32 SLI Deluxe

of cause my budget is over $2000 :) But i'm a serious gamer and worked hard to earn that!!

I just put together a similar build this past weekend, you're gonna love it! Everything runs like butta! The cool and quiet driver is freakin genius! Really lets you bump up your clocks, hardware permitting.

The latest comparisons done between Intel and AMD have AMD winning in every category. In the gaming category AMD blew Intel away with even it's cheapest 64-bit processor. As it stands for this month, AMD is the way to go.....for everything.

Yeah well thats not excalty the best advice seeing as nvidia are better then ati at the moment.

Amd is better then intel for heat, watts, games, and business applications. Ie everything. Also price, go amd. And if you need to save some money just get a 6600gt or similar, you can pick those up for a resonable price.
