3800 X2 vs 4000+ San Diego

I wanna see if any of you X2 fanboys can convince me that I should be getting an X2-3800 or even a X2-4200+ vs a 4000+ single core with 1mb cache and the better San Diego core. I've read both overclock fairly well, and I of course plan to do so... I don't do much multi-tasking, I create the occasional DVD now and then, but I mostly game,and listen to music or watch TV on my rig, so I don't really do anything that requires another core. I just want my games to give me wood...

I plan on pairing one of the proposed cpu's up with following :
EDIT: currently looking at:Abit KN8 or MSI K8N SLI - F
G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB DDR 500
XFX 7800 GTX
X-Fi XtremeMusic
WD Caviar 250GB Sata II
CoolMax 600w PSU

I welcome any suggestions or product recommendations you can offer.

Well, i think whoever reccomends a 3800X2 is nuts, cause it's only at 2ghz. The 4000+ is the best choice, also, i would try to get an opteron 148 s939 before they're sold out. Really good processors, and they overclock like MAD.

I'd skip on the gigabyte board, there are much better out there.

Also the SATAII drives are useless, no faster than regular SATA.

Yeah I'm already looking at the Abit K8N or AN8 model instead of the Gigabyte.. I'm still doing research tbh.

On the sata issue... since I'm upgrading from PATA's anyway I figure I may as well get the SATA II drive since most boards support them now.... and the price difference is negligable.

Now your dual core, I WANT ONE. Theres only 2 choices for dual core-

-AMD X2 3800+

-AMD X2 4400+

The 4400 has the 1mbx2 cache, while the 3800 has the 512x2. These both will overclock to 2.4ghz easily (its not hard, if you dont know ask me). once at 2.4ghz they have the same performance as thier expensive counterparts.

Yes those opterons look very tempting, especially the price vs the 4000+.

I know of the O/C potential of the X2-3800+ but are you saying that it can do just as well o/c'd as the similarly priced single core 4000+? Well more and more games are beggining to support Dual core- FEAR and some others (cant remember).

Its also better in the long run, in theory a 3800X2 overclocked to 2.4ghz is the same as 2x 2.4ghz 512kb cahce processors, in this case a 3800+. The difference in performance between a 3800+ and 4000+ (single core) is very little (check benchmarks).

If you really want a 4000+, then get the 3700 and overclock that instead. Its much cheaper.

On the contary, frequency is hardly the standards to judge a processor these days. Opteron is not made for games, its made for servers, people think its "fancy" because its suppose to be very powerful, it is, but not for gaming.

There are more to CPU than a kid's understanding of frequency + brand, to get a correct judgement on performance of CPUs go to a benchmark website and see what they get as value for BF2. (infact most dont even test Optron because its not even a gaming cpu)

Its really easy. Go with the X2. AMD has released a patch to deal with programs that don't use dual cores. Even if it doesn't work just set the affinity to use a single core. Easy as that.

I had a LAN last night with two dual core machines in it, pretty sweet, they would switch the affinity so that windows would use the first core, and the games would use the second. All I can say is wow.

Well I have an Abit Fatal1ty AN8 SLI with a 64 3800+ and It OC's like Mad but If I was you I would go for the Dual Core so in a couple of months when The new apps/games use the X2 tech you will not regret it but for now I will stick with my 3800+

WTF are you smoking? The amd opteron 1xx series is basically a more thoroughly tested, rebadged athlon.There is no difference. The optys are cheaper, but better binned, oc extremely well, and are great gaming processors, so please don't spread that kind of ignorant crap around here, because I guarantee that someone will believe it.

and gettin 70,000 + with no OC. bf2 runs sweet with varied settings, isnt that enough these days?are you lot trying to run NASA in the background?

(i would have gone PCIe but spent far too much on the X800 doh)

if you do go for a DFI board, my northbridge fan failed after about 2 months use so get a vantec Iceberq ordered to replace the stock one (if thats still a problem on NF4 boards)
