There is no x2 opteron, the dual cores start with the 165, and no they don't. The 4400+ is a toledo core, meaning each core has a 1mb l2 cache, same as the opterons.

I don't know how you can say sli isn't worth it. I agree that having sli right now is mostly for bragging rights, but futureproofing for sli is just smart shopping. If you get a sli board and a single kick a55 videocard, then a year from now, instead of replacing your one card with another very expensive card, you can get another of the one you already have at a discount. To me, sli and crossfire are a way of saving money down the road. But yeah, if you get it now it's pretty much a WASTE of money. But it doesn't hurt to get a sli board if you're starting from scratch.

      ------------------

(ps: when I say "sli" I also refer to crossfire. I know they're different technologies, it's just easier, usually, to just say sli. Most people pretty much think "two videocards" when they read sli. I only mention that cause I obviously have ATI)

Um...130% performance for 175% the price isn't exactly an advantage. You can trade in your old card for a better card in the future and be set for the newer games.

What do you mean by "trade in"? I still don't agree but okay.

Well, not trade in. But sell you old one and buy a better one. a 6800GT would sell for like $230. A 7800GT is $270 after mail-in rebate. Instead of spending another $250 on a 6800GT just pay the $40 difference and get crazy performance.

How do you not agree that 175% price for 130% performance is bad...

point is that sli might not be so great right now, but neither is a duel core processor apparently. I wouldn't be surprised if around the time duel core's start gaining support, so do sli/crossfire. Once the support is in, they'll start showing their power. And do you really think you can upgrade to a 7800 for fifty bucks? Maybe if you're lucky, but who's going to buy a used 6800 for $230? I can get a new one with a warrenty for less than that. Shipping included.

There's always the off chance you can sell something at a profit. I sold my used laptop at a profit even after upgrading it. But it's generally a hassle and a half. You'd be lucky to unload a used 6800 for $180, and a decent 7800 looks to be around $400+. If you Froogle something and see "$256-600" , chances are that the lower priced cards are lesser versions or scam sites. course, the opposite is true as well. $600 is obviously too much. I'd say the top 7800 goes for about the same as my x850xt pe did: $420.

I said 6800GT, not 6800. Difference, no? A 6800GT is $285 for the cheapest reliable one (eVGA).

And Dual Cores are a totally different thing. Its 200% the performance for 200% the price. Or 100% increase for 100% increase in price. Not 30% increase in performance for 75% increase in price.

Any knowledgeable person knows that SLI isn't worth it unless you have an unlimited budget.

not when it comes to gaming. Since modern games don't make use of the duel core, the single core runs a little under regular single core specs. Apparently. That's what I'm learning while researching for a new processor. And sure, two midrange cards in sli will be beat by the best card on the market, but that's the fault of the decision maker, not the rig. Get a top 7800 (sorry, I don't know much about nVidia yet) and get another in a year. For equal peformance, you're most likely going to save a lot of money by switching to Geiko.

                  Schwaaaaaa?

                    Wrong on that one.

                    7800GTX > 2 x 6800GTs in SLI
