Anyone here running SLI dual 7800 gtx (256)?

Does anyone have 2 7800 GTX cards in SLI? What has your experience been thus far? Are you encountering any crashes? Do you feel that these two cards are giving you a noticeable difference in performance vs. just 1 7800 GTX card?

I'm asking because I'm configuring a new SLI enabled PC and wondering if it's worth dishing out the extra 500 bucks for another 7800 GTX card for a technology that is new and may cause more headaches than benefits.

My buddy who's building the PC thinks I'm getting greedy for even mentioning a second card.

2 gigs Ram

120 gig SATA II drive
Nvidia 7800 GTX 256mb

It would be stupid buying a AMD 4400+. The AMD 4000+ is a FX 53 in discuise.

The prize doesn't always follow the performance, remember that.

I would suggest buying the 4000+ since it proves a lot better than all the others. Only the FX 57 beats this CPU.

I'm sorry can you elaborate? I must apologize, I've owned Pentiums all my life and have never owned an AMD. Thank you and much appreciate your input.

Well, I've never had a AMD myself. :) Only Pentium. But my next CPU is going to be an AMD since it tops the lists. I can give you a link that was very usefull for my choices next time.

I think you're quite confused Jackass. A 4400+ is a dual core processor. The 4000+ is an old FX and that's not a dual core. I have a 4400+ myself and it runs completely stable at 2.8GHz (250X11). If you can get a 4400+ at a decent price, don't pass it up.

I just finished reading the story...and I don't think I agree with you Jacka. I think that there aren't many titles out there now (probably none) that can fully utilize the strength of 4400+ dual core chips. Thanks for the opinion rymaples.

An X2 CPU is good for multi-tasking too and esp if you listen to music. 4400+X2, without some tweaks = basically a 3700+ San Diego Core in terms of gaming.

On-Topic = SLI is worth it, if the game take advantage of it. Bf2 does obivously. But, if you're will, get just one now and get the 2nd one later when its far cheaper (well...). Its your choice really, but it will round out the system if you, consideirng what you have already.

my laptop has mobile amd 64 bit +4000 and I would have to agree with you.

The 4400+ is a x2, so the comparisons between it and the 4000+ don't make any sense (pricewise). Dual core is the way of the future, more games (quake 4, serious sam 2) are starting to take advantage of it. So if you can get the 4400+, buy it, you'll be glad ya did.

Nah, don't get a second 7800 yet, wait a while, a single 7800GTX can run any settings you dream of now with the rest of the specs you're looking at.

The X2 is a Dual Core CPU. It has 2 cores running at 2.2GHz each. There are NO GAMES out right now that take advantage of a Dual Core CPU and certainly not Battlefield 2. However Unreal Tournament 2007 and most games based on the Unreal Engine 3 will support Dual Core. In essence, Dual Core is the future. However you also need a very good videocard for the Dual Core to be of much use, and that doesn't seem to be a problem for you. Whether you get the X2 4400+ or 4000+, its an excellent choice either way. I recommend getting the Dual Core if you can afford it. One of my favorite sayings; "You can overclock a Dual Core to Single Core speeds, but you cannot overclock a Single Core to Dual Core speeds." A Single Core CPU will be grossly outmatched in a Dual Core game. So yea, if you can afford it, get the X2 4400+ and overclock it to like 2.6GHz or 2.8GHz.

As for the SLi topic. SLI isn't worth it, IMO. Its only for really rich people. If you think you have room in your budget for another 7800GTX, still don't get it. You only get like a 30% increase in performance from another GTX, and its quite illogical since a single GTX will run ANY game out there right now at Maximum graphics. I, personally, like to plan for the future. If you've got the money, start saving. Come mid-2006, games based on the Unreal Engine 3 are going to come out. If you've seen the Unreal Engine 3 pics you'll know thats its demanding as hell. It seems that a 6600GT is needed to run the game at 800x600 on medium. A 7800GTX will probably run UT2007 on medium settings on 1280x1024. Most people like me have started to already save up for another PC. I have $450 in my bank for my next PC right now and it goes up by $100 every month. I intend to buy a GeForce 8 card when the time comes.

For now, just get a single GTX. Its going to last you (as in you'll play games at maxed out graphics) for the next 9 months and then you'll be playing on med settings for the next 9 months after that. Around August 2006, I think, GeForce 8 comes out and you'll want to get that for the next-gen graphics of these amazing games.
