Let me clear up a few things.

I have a 6800GT OC and a 3500+. I run EVERYTHING on HIGH with 4xAA/8xAF at 1280x1024 with NO stuttering.

I USED to have stuttering until I upgraded to 2x1gb of RAM. You DO NEED 2GB of RAM if you want it on high, PERIOD.

Your friend was getting good FPS/No stutering because he had lighting and textures on either med-low. Textures and the lighting is what causes the lag (mainly textures).

Clean out your video drivers making sure to use driver cleaner. Delete your current shader folders, and let it re-cache Surf Guru3d for the best Nvidia VGA drivers and install.

Above may help somewhat, but without 2GB you WON'T be running everything maxed out.

Ok, seems some systems need 2 gb to run high for some reason. As my machine runs all high, with 6xaa, and 16xaf at 1280x1024 with only 1gb of measly corsair value select memory. Maybe my machine is some miracle machine or something, but i get pretty solid average 60fps when playing BF2.

I havn't overclocked since my mobo got screwed (couldn't post at all, tried clearing cmos, didn't work) for that. I only overclock my vid card, and that overclock posted in sig won't work for BF2 as my card gets too hot or something and goes crazy. My BF2 overclock is about 425/1062, which isn't much from 400/980.

My X800XL runs BF2 pretty damn good on High (even though it shouldn't even have the power to!) Also, I only have 1GB of RAM and haven't overclocked anything yet.

So I don't know why your 7800GTX can't.

O/C'ing really doesn't do a whole lot, maybe a few extra fps. But really, the main reason to O/C is to get the little extra "oomph" that no one wants to pay for. If your rig runs badly, O/C really isn't what it needs, it needs to be trouble shooted or upgraded.

No you don't, and if Punkbuster is giving you troubles, roll back the IDE and firewall drivers.

ok guys after looking into things further on several forums, i have come to this conclusion.

nvidia users need 2GB, ati users need only 1GB for ALL HIGH settings.

this is an odd remark, but its been 100% true so far for about 20 users. anyone with the ATI 850XT or 800XT runs the game fine maxed with only 1gb. But anyone with 6800 (or in my case 7800) needs to get that extra ram. Does anyone else see this connection or is this just me??

I doubt it since I experience harddrive activity with my X800XT if I set to much on high. Although my XP is stripped down to a minimum of services I do have an Audigy 2 soundcard with bloated drivers and software. Also the new ATI drivers are using more memory. All in all I have about 850MB free when I start BF2.

My system goes to crap with only 1GB of RAM. It can still play on Highest settings but when looking around it stutters like crazy, and when things happen in front of the sights it slows down too. 2GB was probably the best thing I did for the game.

Firewall drivers ?????????

Yes, nForce 4 has built-in firewall (which is very ****ty, btw). You should disable it in the bios, if you have that option, or just install chipset drivers without installing firewall drivers, for future reference. Now you could try either rolling it back, or updating it and disabling it, either should do the trick. Don't forget to get rid of nvidia IDE driver, that one is pure **** as well. Default M$ driver is much better. Well, it doesn't cause PB to crash your system.
