Okay guys, here is my story...

For a long time I was playing battlefield 2 on a GeForce 5200 128mb video card, and it played battlefield 2 PERFECTLY on minimum settings. But I wanted more, I craved more, so I bought a x800 xl 256mb video card made by ATI. It's BRAND NEW! So latly i've been playing, and it crashes to desktop? WTF? So I install latest drivers, un-install and re-install battlefield 2 multiple times, ruling out that the game is NOT the problem, because this never happens with the GeForce 5200. So it's the video card, which makes me VERY upset.

Another annyoing fact:
THE GEFORCE 5200 IS NOT ON THE LIST OF COMPATIBLE VIDEO CARDS FOR BATTLEFILD 2! I'm very upset with ATI, and unless they fix this problem for me, there will be hell raised at ATI.

This day will be decalred the day of all days for ATI!

Instead of using the ATI drivers, try going to the Omega drivers. It fixed many of the problems I was having with my 9600 XT.

One, it belongs in the hardware or client support section. Two, maybe it's overheating, and what do you mean by CTD, freeze on the screen meaning that you have to reset your comp, it just suddenly resets in the middle of the game, or it goes back to your normal screen when you log in from XP, if it is the latter, it is a problem with the software, if it is the other two, it's a virus, a bug, or something might be overheating, etc.

EDIT: and try putting in the patch 1.02, cause you do know that every time you uninstall, then install once again, it doesn't install the patch even if it was there before you uninstalled it.

I'm running the game using a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with no problems at all. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help, but I don't think that the problem is with ATI products...

Hardware is a funny thing. If you search around you will be able to find similar stories about NVidia cards. Some combinations of hardware just cause problems and with the amount of different possible configurations in a PC it is hardly surprising major issues occur for some that don't really reflect a fault with any particular component.

I am not an ATI fan boy by the way as I have 6800 GT and sorry to hear you are having issues but I have had cards from both ATI and Nvidia over my years PC gaming and either can be problematic.

With your particular problem is your PSU up to the job? This latest generation of GFX card are quite power hungry and if you don't have the power to run the card things like CTD can occur because the card is Ok running Windows but draws more power in 3d operations.

When you get a new gfx card there are several things to have in mind. 1) remember to unistall and clean out traces of old drivers. 2) make sure the game you play automatically detects the new card, or set settings for game to its default settings.

Look in my post in this thread on how to 1) clean old drivers, you should do this for both nvidia and ati 2) set the default settings by deleting/moving your profile, and therby forcing game to use default settings.

This is most likely not ATI's fault, but rather because of reasons described above.

Did you run driver cleaner before installing the ATI card to remove all the driver files that Nvidia leaves behind?

Use 5.7 or 5.8 drivers

1. CTD meaning I freeze frames for about two secconds, then it quits to desktop, just super fast, in in BOOM, CTD

2. I DO have the latest patches.

3. I will try the Omega drivers

4. I'll hook it up to a new power socket, but I DON'T think that's the issue. Is there a application I can download to see how much power my PC is using?

Yeah, search google for Driver Cleaner Pro. Or at least Driver Cleaner, it should come up with something.

im also running the game on an ati card, and am having no problems.

get that program, and clear out all the old driver traces and try again with newest omegas, all i can think of.

Well, if it crashes to default, then it's not the hardware probably, possibly the driivers,it's a glitch, it's happened to me like 10 times, But i usualy log in fast enough and get back into the game to retrieve my current score of that game, and continuue playing.

X800XT here and running all High and 6x AA at 1280x1024 at about 50FPS or so(granted I have 2 gigs of RAM)but as others have stated your old NVIDIA drivers are prolly the cause of your issues just unsinstalling them doesnt erase them. The general rule of thumb when switching GFX card is to Format then there are no traces of other hardware ID's but I would also reccomend Driver Cleaner

I had the same 5200 card & I upgraded to the ATI X850XT. What I did was go into control panel & remove the Nvidia drivers, then ran Driver Cleaner Pro several times. I think 3 times in a row. Then I Put the new vid card in along with the new power supply I had to buy also to power up the monster. Then I installed the drivers (5.7 catalyst w/control panel). Of course a week later the 5.8 drivers come out. ATI has a driver uninstaller you can d/l on their website. Worked great! installed the 5.8 & had no probs. Yes you will have an occasional CTD. If it is a daily thing then I would check into RAM issues. BTW....the X850XT is Sweeeeeeeet! Rock on!
