Power saving settings

How many of you have your computer set to downclock the processor to save power?

Not that I am aware of. My laptop might do something, but I certainly don't have it that way on my desktop.

I have it enabled. If I don't need it at 100%, why the hell should I waste the extra power and added heat for no reason.

Not just Intel. It's more of a Windows setting now. I just installed Windows 7 and it's set as to power saving and I noticed my CPU was at 1ghz while idling. I didn't even notice until I opened CPU-Z. I'm just deciding whether or not to keep it like that.

My laptop has a button i press which underclocks the CPU when needed, and another to Overclock it when needed. pretty pro.

Not just Intel. It's more of a Windows setting now. I just installed Windows 7 and it's set as to power saving and I noticed my CPU was at 1ghz while idling. I didn't even notice until I opened CPU-Z. I'm just deciding whether or not to keep it like that.

Unless something has gotten bugged your CPU should go up to the right clock when you need performance, so there's no real reason to turn something like that off.

I only have a "system cooling" option under Processor Power Management.

No, I have a desktop.

Start menu > control panel > system and security > power options

Three options: Balanced, High Performance, Power Saving.

I haven't tried power saving, but "balanced" downclocks the CPU when it's not needed at full capacity and "high performance" (which is what I used to use in Vista) keeps the CPU at 100% clock speed (3.1ghz in my case)

As you can see there are only options for the cooling policy, but if you look on this page: http://www.ithinkdiff.com/different-...-in-windows-7/ , you will se furter options for the processor state.

That doesn't downclock the CPU, it just limits utilisation.
