USB will have its own drivers and totally bypass your sound card.

so ALL of the processing for sound is done on that little usb card?

and also since some of these headsets say "the usb thing provides 'surround' sound" what does that mean if i only use the 3.5mm? will i not have surround sound type of audio? i dont quite understand.

also ill mention again that i tried actually plugging the analog plugs into my motherboard instead of using the usb connector and i couldnt get any sound in my headphones from the onboard audio..

If you only have 2.1 speakers... it'll only be 2.1. As for USB, I believe audio processing will be done by software obviously run on the CPU. The soundcard won't be touched.

Unless you're anal or enjoy high quality music, you may as well not get a soundcard and just do that...

Then forget using USB, you have to use the 3.5mm jacks on the back of the X-Fi.

and what im asking is does NOT using the usb thing CHANGE HOW SOUND IS OUTPUT'ed onto the SPEEAKERS if in fact the cans were designed with the usb in mind for surround sound

Re: for some reason i wasnt able to get this soundcard to work

Well, yes, through USB it won't be as of good quality as if you were to use the 3.5mm jacks on the X-Fi.

Hardware processing > software processing in terms of quality and performance (although in a lot of cases this is really just theoretical).

but for some reason even when i try to plug my headphones into the motherboard without the usb im not able to get any sound whatsoever. im trying to figure out what the deal is because maybe its more of a problem with the cans than it was the soundcard.

... you mean plugging it into your X-Fi rather than into your motherboard.

                    You're confusing me (ohno)

Me, too. I thought he bought the one with PCI-E x1 because he asked about PCI-E a few days ago.

Here is a list what you (Field) should do:

                      1. Unplug the USB thing.

                      2. Disable onboard Realtek.

                      3. Use a cheap earphone and connect it to 3.5mm headset out (not line out).

Then tell us whether you still have problem or not.

Or just clear up what sound card you have and what it is you are trying to connect.

..i returned the soundcard yesterday.. but ..today.. for the first time i tried plugging my headphones into the actual jacks on the motherboard (for the ;onboard; sound) and i wasnt able to get any audio from that either even though at this point nothing is disabled

^this was the soundcard that i was goofing with trying to figure it out. see i still dont entirely know whats going on with the sound and headphones because for system requirements it says pci2.1 which very likely would make it not work on my computer idk. but then now today i also notice that i cant get any sound on my headphones from the onboard soundcard either.

Obviously make sure it's enabled via the BIOS, that's the first stop.

Then go through Windows sound options with a fine comb, looking at every option. It will work, something has just been changed somewhere.

                            Also, check Device Manager.

                                X-Fi Titanium...?

If you wanted a high end card, there are much better ones out there, but otherwise, an Xtreme_gamer would suffice.
