i bought a soundblaster x-fi extremeGamer from bestbuy yesterday and i plugged it in and all that and installed the drivers off the cd but for some reason i was never able to get any sound to my headphones, i also tried installing the drivers from off the creative website and tried plugging my 2 can plugs into all of 5 different spots even though its color coded i mean jees and i was goofing around in the audio control panel and i looked at my audio devices and stuff and wao idk if i was missing something stupid but its probably good that it didnt work cause i kind of wanted to go a bit higher end anyways. this kind of stuff doesnt really make me want to buy more things, srsly i have sampled 3 purchases very recently and they have all failed pretty good monitor, headphones and now soundcard. i mean maybe I am the fail with the soundcard but...

I had conflicts when I first got my X-fi until I disabled onboard sound in the BIOS. I had to uninstall everything even related to the onboard sound device, drivers, disable it in Device Manager, turn it off in the BIOS. My computer only has ONE sound device!!! For a little bit it was like, "but here is another sound device right here, let's install drivers for it." I had to slap it around for a while, until it forgot that there was ever anything other than the X-fi that I had provided. All other sound devices are now forsaken.
All kidding aside, if you didn't disable onboard sound at least in Device Manager or your BIOS, try that. If there is an IRQ conflict, you can also try moving it to a different slot.Comment

huh ok yeah i tried disabling the onboard audio in the bios but i didnt uninstall the drivers and stuff for it. idk i just quit cause i was getting tired of ****ing with it and i was going to return it anyways. but yeah that will probably be the next thing id try with my next sound cardComment

Depends what you want to do. For gaming, just get the XtremeGamer or X-Fi Forte if you have the balls to work through any errors.
For music, X-Fi Prelude or Xonar D2/D2X/STXComment

maaan i tried to get it to work again trying to uninstall the realtek drivers and all that i really dont know what else i would have needed to do i just couldnt get any sound on my headphones. im starting to wonder if its the headphones or something wierdComment

Take a look at the graph. Your PCI-E x16 is linked to northbridge, while PCI-E x4 is probably 4 PCI-E x1 linked to southbridge. Since the driver MAY assume that you put it in your x1 or x4 slot which linked to south bridge, and causes all your problem of card not detected.Comment

First off, open Device Manager
Start > Right click on My Computer and Click on Manage > Click Device Manager along the side
Look for any Yellow Exclamation points, expand 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers' and tell us if anything is there. If you want, you can take a screen shot.Comment

im using this topic for when i get my other soundcard. i know very certainly its user error i just didnt want to keep goofing with it if i wasnt even going to keep it.
the x-fi gamer one that i bought used a regular pci slot it wouldnt fit in the x4 slot. Nothing fits in the X4 slot, not even those other soundcards with the funny small pin layout because the card would have to be upside down where the jacks would be inside the case.
when i was trying to hear something and was playing music or whatnot i looked at my volume bar deal down in the bottom right corner and it showed that there was an output like the bar was jumping up and down and such. idk if that means i should be hearing something or not.
i didnt try looking at the device manager because i am retarded and forgot about that BUT...one thing that i dont get is when i disabled onboard sound in the bios i was still getting sound when i turned my computer back on, and this was when my phones were NOT plugged into the soundcard.
today i went into the device manager like you said and looked at the 3 sound devices i had
i disable the 2 except for my headset and i still get sound. im almost thinking my headset needs to be plugged into that usb thingy to work because i tried putting the analog plugs into the jacks on the motherboard and i couldnt get any sound then either when all of the devices were turned on.Comment
