my 300GB one is working pretty good im not sure why you'd need a whole terabyte of ROM

It's not ROM. ROM is "read only memory".

Plus, 1TB ain't that much if you want HD movies on your computer.

My Motorola DCT3416-I has a 160 Gigabyte Western Digital Caviar SE16 in it, and it can hold around 20 hours of HDTV. I think it all depends on what codec/format you want to use.

According to The New York Times, "Since the average high-definition movie is 4 gigabytes to 5 gigabytes," most HD Movies are 4-5 gigs. A Terabyte is 1000 gigs(Though the actual space on the drive will be less than 1TB, since the manufacturers don't calculate the space the same way as an operating system would.) A Terabyte drive will probably hold close to 200 HD movies if that's all you've got on the drive.

That's 720p. A lot of my movies are 1080p and thus, a lot bigger.

The Motorola box is 1080i, so those figures still stand, and let's face it, there aren't any 1080p TV broadcasts and the only real difference with movies is whether your TV will have to de-interlace it or not. See here.

Though, we are getting a little off track.

              Seagate drive = fail

              Seagate company = win

I knew when I read this article Seagate would be doing what was needed to try to help people. Its why I love Seagate drives. (Loved Maxtor too, but Seagate bought them)

Its been a long time, but I dont recall Western Digital taking all this effort during their MILLION drive recall.

Of course, I think by now all hard drive manufacturers have had and will have large recalls now and again. QC usually can't catch everything.

Every company goes through stages where large numbers of their products fail, it's an inevitability. What matters is how customers are treated in their time of need.

Even with these failures, there's still only 4 brands I'd ever trust my data to. Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung and Intel.

Interesting. Unless I'm skimming too fast, it looks like you won't use your data with that fix. I would have thought it might be a low-level format or something, but you wouldn't be able to keep your data if that were the case. I guess the firmware can be upgraded while leaving the low-level formatting alone.

Seagate = Western Digital. Not really a big difference between the brands, all HDs will eventually fail. Maybe Samsung, the Spinpoints are great price/storage ratio, but how are they compared to the big two?

You should know this, you make movies don't you? All that Fraps must be eating your hard drive space.

                        Re: Seagate fail

This is old news to me.

I heard that Seagate 1 TB drives were failing 3-5 months ago hence why I went with a WD 1 TB hd.

Now I'm proud to say I just bought my second WD green TB hd for a removeable casing I had siting around waiting for a new sata drive.

However, all other seagate drives as far as I know perform awesome, just I think they rushed the whole TB deal and this is the result.
