Win7 has NEGLIGIBLE performance gain over WinXP. I don't know why on earth that is so offensive to you. Why are you trying to sell Win7 for MS? What stake do you have in it?

I didn't mind it at all, personally. Now I think it's a bit better, since it still provides protection without annoying users who don't want to be promped when making system changes.

We haven't had Windows 7 in our hands for more than a couple days, but we've had Windows Vista for as much as a couple years (Some of us), and already know that it's superior to Windows XP through first hand experience. Initial first impressions with Windows 7's beta already point to a similar experience.

I've noticed that disabling UAC does a bit more than that sometimes. I actually don't mind UAC now that it has multiple levels of annoyance.

This is pure comedy gold....in the other post where you want to argue with me, you challenged me with the insinuation that I have not used Vista or Win7....and here you are, admitting that you haven't used it.

Here is why your argument fails.

Microsoft and it's operating systems are ENTERPRISE centric....at least they were up to Vista. Home users were an aftermarket and an after thought. The OS was designed for business use....which made it highly efficient and customizable. It just so happened that it was a great and solid platform for gaming...which greatly catered to the aftermarket, the home user.

With Vista, they reversed course and it failed...that's why business never adopted Vista....and they may not adopt Win7 if it can't outperform XP Pro. Why would I need to update my workstations that run Office just fine when it might force a hardware upgrade as well? Economic times are tough. Businesses will take the path of least resistance.

I won't come out and say you are flat out wrong because that would diminish the reasons why we are here...I just tend to think that you need to open up to the bigger picture which will provide you with much more clarity.

Stop making baseless claims that aren't rooted in reality. The discussion is relevant. You and others wish to make Win7 to be the savior of MS, my wisdom and experience tells me to proceed slowly. You haven't even had the OS in your hands for a week yet....and all of a sudden you know all of it's innards? Instead of emotional reactions, how about a deliberate dissection of the OS so that we (the consumers) can make educated statements about it. Comparisons to Vista and XP are not only necessary, they are critical to the analysis.

I found one bug which is quite funny. Win7 sidebar turns off when UAC is set to disabled!

My impression so far is that Win7, while attempting to steer the misguided direction of Vista back int the realm of acceptance, still falls short on the performance level. It does not make any great gains in anything. WinXP still holds it's own, and that is amazing for an 8 year old OS.

How do you change it to act like Vista?

Right click on the taskbar > properties. It's one of the options there. I don't have my VM up right now or I'd be more specific. But it has to do with how things are grouped. I believe the second (of three) options in the drop down menu is what it does for Vista. Group only when out of room on taskbar or something like that.

I found it annoying period. I just changed the option so the behavior was more like Vista. However, after more testing I may put it to the default since I do use Pidgin and have only one window for that open at any given time (<3 tabs).

The beta has been very smooth for me so far. I've only had a chance to install it on a virtual machine, but even on that the performance has been impressive.

This is from someone who has been on Vista since about Day 1 and prior to that in the pre-public releases.

Well Windows 7 should perform as fast or faster than Windows Vista on most decent machines, and of course it'll a lot faster than XP, so it should be good. I haven't tried the beta yet, but as far as I know the kernel and driver model haven't changed from Vista.

Even if Windows 7 wasn't on the horizon, there really is no reason to buy Windows XP instead of Windows Vista/Windows 7 unless you plan on sticking it on a really low end PC or a Netbook.



By the time Service Pack 1 came out, Vista was everything it should have been. There's just too many incompetent bloggers out there spreading false information about the operating system that made the general public THINK Vista wasn't what it should have been. Windows 7 seems to be Windows Vista with a fresh new User Interface and more attention to detail, and it should transcend above what Windows Vista brought to the table.
