Out-Of-Game Browser Confirmed for Battlefield 3

On the 19th, Signa posted up in the forums about Battlefield 3 not having an in-game browser. My comment about this news at the time was something like, "Yeah, I didn't post that up because we all know about Battlelog." To me it seemed like a "no big deal" kind of thing. Well, once again, the internet has proved me wrong and many are freaking out about the fact that Battlefield 3 will not have an in-game browser. I am happy to say that TGN is not and many have taken the aproach of, "I will check it out at the beta.", which is a great attitude to have.

There is so much freaking out and rage about this fact, that many are wondering how they are even going to connect to a game or how will they possibly be able to alt+tab while playing? Of course, all forgetting about Battle Log and the fact that they have been using alt+tab since the start of Battlefield 1942. It seems that in the computer games of today, alt + tab is a strange concept and should not be performed. What is worse, Alan Kertz (Demize99) has stated, you can close the game and then join another faster. ***GASP!!!*** Close the game! This is madness!

So I've decided to take a few moments and post up further information about Battlelog in the hopes that this hysteria will die down just a little, which it probably wont, but I did what I could.

Here is a video from GamerSpawn to remind us of the features Battlelog will have:

Another video from PixelEnemy having an interview going into a little more detail about Battlelog and why:

Here are a few important leaked screenshots from bf3blog.com:

This picture shows that from the Battlelog you launch the game:

This picture shows that from the Battlelog you select your servers and filter options:

So as you can see, Battlelog is more than just a stat site. It is the very launch pad of everything Battlefield 3. Not just stats and features, but friends lists, chat walls, friend groupings, favorite areas, and launching the game.

Demize99 has stated on his Twitter account about the ease of using Battlelog as well as how it is no different from the things we have to do today in an in-game browser:

So no, Battlefield 3 does not have an in-game browser. It has an out-of-game one that has many more features included that none of the other Battlefield games fully had. Each game had pieces of Battlelog, so to speak. Those that did participate in the alpha has liked it as well.

Yes, you do have to have a browser open to select games. No different than your X-fire, Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Steam, anti-virus, other websites you forgot to close, etc... You could possibly alt+tab and close the browser, but that, again, may be madness.

So with this all being said, Battlefield 3 is confirmed to have a browser that you will be able to try during the beta in September and see for yourself how it really works and if you will like it or not. Please do not freak out and if you know someone that is, you may want to point them to possibly the only positive posting about Battelog being the server browser on the internet, this article.

Not having an in-game browser sucks, websites can suffer from load issues and DDoS that master servers that hold the server lists are much less prone to. But... As long as it doesn't take 3 days to open/close the game it will just remain a small annoyance.

A lot of people are pointing out the DDOS thing. The thing is since BF2, every internal server browser has been attacked or taken offline at one point or another. We all know what ports they use and you just attack those ports and there you go.

And you make a good point on the 3 day thing. Every time we open Battlefield games there is the EA splash screen, then the music, then the load screen, then the login screen then you are logged in. All thats gone in BF3.

Thats what I was thinking. Thye need to put a better spin on this.
        Not:
BF3 forces you to play throug a browser!
        But instead:
BF3 does away with longwinded intros and splash-screens. Instant action!

It's just as easy to DDoS the EA master server as it is to DDoS the website. It doesn't take that much effort to find its IP. And Demize said they have the same server structure on the server running the website as they would have with a server browser.

Once it is possible (beta?), I would like to see someone do a comparison between loading via Battlelog and then loading in-game via BC2 to see which is faster.

Thats a good idea Anarchy. I bet the beta would be a good time to test the load times of both. I will try to remember to do that. I have fraps and it records the desktop in Windows 7 now, so I should be able to start at the desktop and launch the game from there.

A lot of people are comparing it to BF2 load times for TODAY. The problem with that is today's PC is a lot more than it was when BF2 was released. Same goes for internet connections. So todays BF2 will be a lot faster loading than it was when it first came out. BC2 test, though not a "true" battlefield game, would be more up to date.

i personally dont really care about it comming from a web browser if the game can run well on my system xD. I also have to admit that the game loading in alpha was pretty fast, and if they improve it then it's gonna be almost as easy to start playing bf as it is to come to the tgn forums

I use to use alt+tab with BF2, until they released a patch which caused the game CTD and it persisted through 2142 (I'm sure its fixed now). I also noticed that most of the games now take a hit in FPS when you alt+tab out, but the BF3 Alpha more or less just kept going at about the same frame rate.

Yep it was definitely designed to alt+tab like Demize said. It was instantaneous as well. Almost like alt+tabbing from a web browser.

Looks like BF3 is slowly going to bring the Battlefield FPS genre around to where a multiplayer based games should put more effort in. Its just a couple of features away from really being functional for what I'd like to see. My main wish being a way to group friends into Clans or communities as well as having feeds from those groups. For example announced events similar to what steam does as well as letting me know who is on and being able to see them by groups and not just some random order. I just hope that if the browser launches the game that i can still alt tab and drag the stats or other menus to my second monitor so i can keep an eye on those things.

That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! The main problem with "Battlelog" is that there isn't a way to assign a custom username to play under, it uses the same login name as your main EA/Origin account. They need to sort that out, lots of people don't want to play under their primary EA.com account name.

But that is not inherent in the browser solution, they could do the same with an ingame browser.

Well, that may be possible with the "platoon" feature they keep talking about. They never really clarified what that was.
