I need a new one, mine is now on he minimum spec for Far Cry 2 (ohno)


I would really just like a CPU upgrade on my currrent mobo, as at the moment i dont feel like taking my pc completely to bits, and i dont really want to spend that much money either. I would like to be able to stick the new processor on a new mobo when i get one in the future.

I know this may be difficult, as my mobo and cpu are as old as the stars. I dont have any idea what I'm talking about really, so just shoot me some figures/ideas.

TBH, it would really be a waste upgrading the CPU on that motherboard, as whatever you get it will already be out of date.

In fact, after a quick root around Scan and Ebuyer, it seems that there aren't any better Socket 939 processors on the market. I think you really need to start considering a new build, as you've hit a dead end in terms of upgrades.

yeah the only real place to get socket 939 stuff is ebay. If you do decide to just upgrade that cpu then go for the opteron 939s, good overclockers

I would just splash out and do an upgrade tho, you could do it pretty cheaply

Looking at your existing motherboard i dont think it supports dual core so a full upgrade deffo seems the way to go.



you might be able to get some of the parts (or similar parts) from ebuyer cheaper but thats a quick suggestion. I would maybe spend the extra 10er on the mobo and get this though.
That cooler is actually surprisingly good, i run it fan less on my celeron E1200

What speed is your current DDR2 BTW? You may not need to ditch that.

its not DDR2 its a 939 mobo so its only DDR1

FC2 is a freaking beast, had to turn AA from 8x to 4x to get some better FPS

Thats DDR1 mate. Unless you have the Motherboard listed wrong in your specs it has to be.

AMD chips have the memory controller built into the CPU so a 939 chip can only work with DDR1 memory and an AM2 chip can only work with DDR2. If you have listed the motherboard wrong and it turns out you have an AM2 chip then you can just buy a faster one and save some cash

No. It just runs. Given the cache size of E5200, it isn't very good for gaming. E7200 is better but cost more.

You probably also need a better case. Your current board is mATX, so I suppose you have that board in an mATX case. Nothing really is wrong with mATX, but ATX boards and boxes offer more choices. You can get an mATX board to upgrade, or you have to consider a new built.

Yes they are pretty good chips it would be an enormous improvement over what you have currently and it would lift the bottleneck holding your graphics card back, even when its running stock! If you do a bit of overclocking you should see speeds of 3.2 - 3.5GHz which should give you a further significant boost in performance.

Good spot on the case, you could get a motherboard liek this to fit the current case.

You need to look at this in perspective, he only wanted to update his CPU therefore doesnt want to spend lots of money and his existing system is a single core 939! This E5200 will play games pretty well and it will be a huge increase in performance for him, just not quite as good as E7200.
