Re: Who is planning to get Core i7 and X58?

X*8 motherboards always are expensive as they are the top of the range motherboards (obviously with exceptions such as skulltrail and nvidias SLI variants). When they create the P55 motherboard (if thats what they call it) they will basically be cut down versions of the X. The lower end of the Nehalem chip doesnt look too outrageous from what i have seen, should be sub £200 initially which is completely normal. Once the early limited stock is gone the prices will do the usual £10-20 drop. Even DDR3 is starting to come down into decent price range although all of this is irrelivant as we havent seen concolusive evidence of how much difference these chips actually make yet.

I could ignore watercooling and simply go for i7 :|:

It's just too expensive for what you get now anyway.

Almost £500 for the mid-range CPU...

Then i would have to get new DDR3 and a new motherboard. I think i'll wait a tad. Plus, my watercooling kit will fit the i7 when i get it for even more extreme overclocking!

It's good that LGA1366 can use LGA775 coolers.

Watercooling is more awesome. :) But then you gotta post a vid of it running!

Why do u need the midrange CPU? - im just gunna get the 920 tbh

id say ur probs better off goin for the watercooling regardless though. You already have quadcore and 4GB ram which you havent had THAT long if im not mistaken and as you say, the cooler kit will fit the i7.

1366 can use 775 coolers but my understanding is tht you need a new mounting bracket. Im defo getting one for my Ultima, they are only a fiver from scan.

By the time u come round to gettin an i7 they may have released the mainstream counter parts (1156 or 1160... something like that) which might make a lot more sense moneywise.

Yea, exactly i may as well get good cooling now, a 4.0ghz Q6600 is in no way a slouch. Then by the time i want i7, i can buy a cheaper setup and a new watercooling mounting block and have my way with it!

the available watercooling stuff specifically for i7 is a bit limited atm anyway from what i have read :/

Just keep this thought in your mind... octocore upgrade

I think I'm going to pass on the i7's. I just upgraded last August to a Q6600 and the fact that it's yet again a brand new socket just annoys me more than anything.

It'll be a long while before I upgrade the CPU or MoBo again.
