It's all about Price vs Performance and Nvidia fails in that spot almost always, their cards are overpriced, and only 3 or 4 FPS faster then a comparable ATI card, they also run much hotter and offer less features - no UVD, no full audio HDMI. For the price of on 9800GX2 I could get two of the new HD4870 512mb.
The cheapest 8800GT I can find on Newegg is $130. 4850 is $165. Is the performance difference big enough to warrant an extra $35?
Well 35 dollers more gives you the same(ish) performance as a 9800GTX which was previously abou 80-100 dollers more (i think). You shoudl also be able to pick up a 9800GTX for around the same price now though.
This has became a well popular thread meights, one may actually have to keep track of the toms hardware updates and keep this thread on the cutting edge of... whatever.

It depends. For those "WIMTBP" games, NVIDIA cards perform better. Also there are games, such as Crysis, which ATI cards just don't perform good. However, other tests show that ATI cards perform better at racing games. Nevertheless, 4870x2 will be an awesome card. Good job AMD. Now we have GTX 200 series at their true price.
Wait, there's GTX 200b on the horizon. This year is truly exciting.
Most of the reviews I have seen seem to say the new GTX2xx series are more about nvidia pushing out the new dye size, and they are not so much a performance jump.
Actually, GTX 200 series are very good design, truly next-gen stuff. NVIDIA made a strategic mistake by underestimating ATI. The original plan of 4800 series was to make one die with 480 SP, but, thank god, that one was scrapped early, and someone higher up in AMD food chain said that there shall be 800 SP. Had NVIDIA had some accurate intelligence, they would have acted differently. What they did successfully is to create a hype over GTX 200, and when the real thing came out, and review shows that it doesn't beat 9800GX2, and they priced 280 at $650, things began to back fire. But they still have something to fight ATI back. We already see how die shrink on 9800 GTX increase clock speed from 700Mhz to 800Mhz range, and they haven't started to use GDDR5 yet. There isn't anything hiding under ATI's sleeve right now, but there's still something to be seen from NVIDIA side. Even 9800GX2++ might be possible.

ATI cards handle racers better as i think they are more shader focussed. Nvidia can handle Crysis better as it has an insane amount of textures which is their focus.... i think
