          I would use Avira AntiVir for a virus scanner and use Zonealarm or Comodo for a firewall, though if you want a complete security suite I would use Avast.

                      I use Avast too, on several computers.

                      I does require you to re-register once a year to keep the free update subscription active, but it will remind you automatically.

                        Seems that AVG might not be the problem after all. I'll keep an eye on it for a while further though :)
