3870 owners unite!

i have a 2900xt (nice looking card btw)

similar performance to a 3870 ect

but the winning formula for the 3870 will be amd spider platform.

room for 4 gfx cards (3870 only)

also there releasing a 3870x2 (similar to the old nvidia 7950x2)

so you could over time just keep adding another 3870x2 untill you have 4 of them,

price wise is alot,but think

2 8800ultra in sli = how mutch cash??? (roughly 1-2 teraflops)

vs

4. 3870x2 in crossfire (cheaper for two ati cards than 2 8800ultra + you can add 2 more nvida cant)

each 3870x2 will be around 1 teraflop per 3870x2

with 4 you have 4 terraflops of gpu power (crysis max dx10 veryhigh perhaps)

of course we will have to see what the benchmarks say but it looks promising.

i for one think ati/amd are thinking for the better,

most of us upgrade our gfx card and sell the old one.

with ati we could save a bit of cash and just add another gpu.

Yes, but you'll probably need a small nuclear power station to run it, and your PC will sound like a helicopter taking off. Also, the performance increase is a curve rather than a straight line- it won't actually quadruple performance, but it will quadruple the price.

tbh, I'm not really gonna be playing many new games anymore, I mostly play CSS where I Get 200 FPS lol...COD4 is probably my last new game that I will be playing so it's not that big of a deal if it's slower.

Quad CrossfireX is the biggest waste of money. Even if you do get two of them, by the time you have saved up enough money to get a third or fourth, there will be new, better cards out.

Plus, you will need serious cooling, a personal nuclear power generator and a compatible 790x chipset motherboard (the ones about at the moment are shocking)

There is no denying, the 3870 is a nice card, but, it could be excellent if the prices were dropped by £15-£20. However, the problem with this is that the 3850 then has to be dropped, and i feel it's already at the lowest price it can go.

The spider platform, at this current time is a let down. I read a few articles, including the latest custom PC which review all the cards, motherboards and CPU's needed for Spider. The Phenom Quad Core was woefully underpowered and offered performance well under a stock E6750.

ATI didn't release a quality reference BIOS, so motherboard manufactures are scrambling to write a few thousand lines of assembly code.

And, Quad Crossfire is a gimmick. In the real world, it has no place. ATI simply use it as a unique selling point to get gamers who aren't quite up to scratch excited about a technology that has limited uses (see Agiea PhysX for reference).

agree with some of the comments there,im usually buy nvidia but the 2900xt was cheap so i gave it a try.

personally i would not get 4 separate cards,im more inclined to to get 2 cards of the 3870x2 variant.

of course im not going to get 4x the performance but hopefully with some good drivers crossfire will be a good step up performance wise.

tba it get a bit tiresome when we end up upgrading our single card solution for the next best card,

i happy to give the 3870x2 in crossfire a go(reviews being good that is)

as for power the 3870xt use the 55m chips as are rather cool compared to some other cards out there,

with the bonus there a bit thiner aswell.

Woot Woot!!! My 3870 is awesome! Idling at 37C now. Thats cooler than my cpu!! Also, does anyone know when ATI tray tools is gonna support it? What do you guys use to control the fan speeds and clocks? Right now Im using Rivatuner for the fan speed and ATI overdrive for the clocks.

Core clock = 805Mhz
Memory clock=1181Mhz

How are you guys running?
