Computer upgrades..

Well unfortunately the time has come to upgrade from my old FX5500..
Getting 60fps max in CS 1.6 is terrible
But I need help, I don't have much of an idea on what to change and all.


I've decided on this graphics card

I dont want a amazing top of the line computer, just something that is a good overall machine..

What I need to find

What are some Suggestions on these?

Also my hard drives should fit on the new mobo, right?

1st u need a mobo then a CPU then RAM then a GPU and then u sould be all good :)
(Mines a laptop with ???mobo 4Gigs of RAM and a 8400m GS GPU and im getting 80 FPS on CSS :))

I basically have a Dell Dimension 4600 with simple modifications
Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHz
2 gigs Ram
Nvidia FX5500
X-Fi Extreme Gamer
250 Watt Powersupply

Trying to spend somewhere around $300-$400

You need a new PSU for sure.

PSU + case $100-120
mobo $100
ram 2GB $70
CPU $120<
------------
$390-410

And then your choice of graphics card.

You can sell your old stuff for about $100 to finance the upgrade somewhat. I would advice against keeping the case and trying to build on it. Keep you eye out for real bargain bare-bones.

Ive got the ram already, and I have a new case coming in friday.
Ok so maybe not exactly new, its my dads friend who is giving me his gaming computer. I have no idea the motherboard in it, PSU, I think he kept his graphics card.
I know that the motherboard is an Asus one, but that leaves it between AGP and PCI-E.

8500gt is a horrible card for gaming.

x1950pro (agp) is the cat's meow, but would need at least a 450W psu (or actually just a decent number of amps on the +12V rail)

7800gs isn't bad, but it isn't worth it compared to x1950pro if you can find it.

for pci-e, hd3850 (low end ~$160) is the way to go, don't even look at nVidia's low end. for mid end, hd3870 ($200-220) or 8800gt (better card, $260-ish) is the way to go.

the mid-end ati cards are more forgiving of psu's because of the new manufacturing process. they just don't eat as much energy as before.

edit: misspoke...if you can find a 7600gt, that's a very good low-end (almost middlish) part for ~$100. no dx10, but you wouldn't want to try dx10 on a (edit) lower-end part, anyway.

Both are right around the same price, and its cheap. Seems like this will be the one I get, unless it is an AGP slot.

Yeah, those two are PCI-E and unless its an AGP slot in that computer, the 7600gt will be the one I get. Not positive what to pick up if its an AGP..
