The 8600GTS isn't that bad of a card. That doesn't mean I am recommending one though. There are simply better deals for the money. As for performance, 8600GTS is just under a X1950Pro. And if anyone was considering a 8600GTS, they obviously don't have enough money for a 8800, which is nearly double the price. (Assuming they are somewhat informed) They also won't be gaming at any large resolutions either. 8600GTS/X1950Pro works best at 1280x1024. (Anything larger is XT/8800 territory) So telling someone to get a 8800 instead of a 8600GTS isn't a good idea either. If the 8600GTS fits the budget, how can you double the price and still have a "budget"?
ok well I had to leave early on my last post and didn't get a chance to talk about the penryn, which someone stated above are not worth waiting for which is not true.
Yes the penryn is a die shrink from 60 to 45 NM which is the most noted change. From this fact alone, it makes this cpu all the better to sit down and wait to buy simply because if you know anything about OCing a cpu, the smaller the die, the lesser the voltage, the lesser the temps, the higher the clock.
Not to mention, the penryn line comes with dual cores that have 6mb cache, not 4. Yes, the quads are 12mb cache.
If you want a budget build, wait for the conroes to become obsolete and then you really get awesome deals. If you want the best thing available, you wait for the penryn.
Now back to the 8600 GT/GTS for TheSpark29.

I looked at the prices on tigerdirect.ca and the "double" in price difference you claim is false. If anything, a 8600 GTS is highly overpriced as the lowest I saw was $205 and the lowest prices 8800 GTS is only $315. Now lets be fair here and say that of course you want some quality to go with your dollar so you would probably want a mid end 8600 GTS with a higher clock and same goes with the 8800 GTS.
So right away, I'm seeing the prices come out to $205-400+ for a 8600 GTS.
The 8800 GTS starts off at $315-440.
So basically I am confused how you can state that a 8600 GTS is a cost effective budget build when the numbers I'm pulling up here do not add together. Sure you may end up spending an extra $100 tops for a 8800 GTS, but the performance you get from it over a 8600 gts justifys the cost.
do u guys think i should get vista premium 32bit or 64bit version?..i was gonna get 64bit but i heard it has alot of driver issues and i wasnt really gonna go use 4 gig ram so i might as well get the 32bit version...i already have vista premium but it was only upgrade version what a shame.

well thats a decision you'll have to make on your own. At least with 64BIT you'll be futureproof as far as an operating system goes. But from what I see, right now its not worth the trouble or a slight performance loss...from what I can tell. I don't even want Vista yet.

Ok, I see. The prices you're referring to are totally different that what I'm using. On Newegg, I the cheapest 8600GTS is $150. The cheapest 8800GTS is $280. So where I am, the 8800GTS is almost twice the price of a 8600. If the cheapest 8600GTS you can find is $200, than I totally agree with you. A terrible terrible deal. How much do 1950XT's cost up there?
I like to do my shopping @ Canadacomputers.com but they suxors when it comes to buying there video cards which is why I used tigerdirect.ca for reference instead.
So thanks for the linx as I'm curious to look at what there selection is and for what price.
I didn't bother looking at ncix.com either simply because I avoid buying online and rather just pick the stuff up at the local store in the area.
