ok i went back to the same place and played it cool and made up some story about my discount at another store.

and its now.

Core Duo E6750 1333fsb<faster chip
2x2GB ram 6400(800mhz:)) <faster ram
320GB sata 16m cache 7200
ati 2900xt sapphire 512mb
asus pk5-se 1333 fsb
750 watt PS

for cheaper 1601$au

so i said ok :)to that and just waiting to see if ram can be ordered.

he did mention corsair ram?is that better than kingston?I think it is?

Get an 8800GTS, miles cheaper and just as powerful, sometimes better, sometimes worse.


As for RAM, IIRC they all order from Taiwanese manufacturers like Hynix and Infineon, so I doubt it'll be very different. When it comes to Taiwanese crap, the price is everything.

Get the 8800gts, not only will it be faster than that pos they call the 2900xt, it'll run cooler and use less power (thus saving you a lot of money in the long run).

Yes, its DX10 compatible, however actual performance in DX10 games is yet to be tested properly. The only available games using the DX10 are poory programmed and thus do not show the full potential of the card.

For now, buy the 8800gts or gtx because its an awesome DX9 card, not because its DX10 compatible.

yeah I just watched my friend play FSX on his 8800 machine with dx10 and yeah it looked way awesome, but the performance was not better than dx9.0c, in fact it was worse in many cases.

It's still a decent amount, and I'd rather save money and have better performance anyday.

and its a older card! the ati tech(mhz/core) has its over it!just driver tweaking now to get its true power!

I would have went for the 8800 is it not been more expensive and its old now:salute:

if the gts is more expensive, then going with a 2900 makes sense if you don't mind the power/heat factors. they usually overclock very well, according to what i've read...but that adds more watts...more power...more heat...

shouldn't be a bad card, by any means.

ok after having troubles getting 6400 series 2 gig sticks i had to settle with 5300/667 ram.

Gigabyte 8800gts 640 mb

also i ordered the 8800gts 640 instead of ATI because i do like nvidia software better and i know there are vista drivers for it:salute:

1) depends on what brand, which chips they used, your motherboard, and whether or not you can (or want to) push the volts if you need to. i'm finding my very good pc6400 is having trouble keeping up with my e6600. d4/\/\n locked intel multiplier.

2) good choice; don't know why the 2900xt is cheaper down under. maybe the electrons flow counter-clockwise?

man why don't card manufacturers state clearly exactly how much power the video card requires? Who the hell has a 750 watt power supply. First of all, that is rediculous. Secondly, the amount of amps running off the 12V current is probably more important. I could see needing 750 watts psu if you were running Quad SLi or something, lol.

I'm not sure on the current currency conversion rates, but the I believe the aussie dollar is about 80% of the US dollar, so that sounds about right.

Corsair *classically* has made some of the best quality memory - not necessarily the fastest, but I don't think I've ever had a bad stick of Corsair memory. The only RMA experiences I've had are second hand, and Corsair bends over backwards to make sure the customer is happy with their Corsair product. Kingston, however, falls down in every department. Much of their RAM *barely* meets the specifications (sometimes failing) at the levels they sell it at, and their RMA process makes you wish you'd just eaten a gun instead.

I'd get hard data on the manufacturer of the power supply - it's probably the most critical piece of computer hardware you buy, and most people scrimp on it. Power supply failures are some of the worst case computer scenarios you can run in to, as they tend to take other components with them.

Other than that, I might advise buying an NVidia card over the ATI. I used to be a staunch fan of ATI products, but after the 9700pro came out many years ago, they've tended to be a step behind NVidia technologically. Their drivers tend to be a bit better, but I'd look for 3rd party ones anyway.
