In my defense, I DO have a DAAMIT-branded gpu, I'm running (at least one) bulk-licensed copy of XP pro for $30, and the processor is used.

Therefore, my frames-per-second/evil-empire-contributions ratio is remarkably high, given by the following equation:

for all Gudness-to-Badness ratio (x),

x=|f/(c + o - g)|, where f=frames per second, c=cpu cost, o=O/S cost, and g=gpu cost if gpu is now made by a processor company < evil.

= |90/(150+30-150)|

=|90/30|

=3

I hate lga775 coolers

Arghh. I got the processor, unplugged all (ALL) the periperhals around it (2fans, 2x1gb mem, 1gpu) plugged it in, bolted my si-128 on top of it (awful, awful, awful design for lga775 sockets, btw), clipped a 120mm fan on top of that, buttoned everything up...and then...

...no boot...

upon closer inspection, i had forgotten to plug in my cpu to the 4-pin pwr cable.

No problem right, just remove the side panel and plug it in, right?

Nope, fiddling with it, I *bumped* the cooler, causing the top two fasteners to pop loose.

So that's where I'm at with my desktop.

I hate intel's sockets. I really, really do. Owing to the fact that *bumping* the hsf caused it to dislocate, I'm thinking I may need to remove the mobo completely, because it might have not been fastened properly in the first place.

I'm also thinking about just going with my freezer 7 pro, which doesn't require the uninstallation of anything to put back in...but that would defeat the purpose of spending $30 on the thermalright, which really is a much better cooler.

did you install the fan without lifting the motherboard?The intel socket is almost impossible to put a fan on without removing the motherboard.

Thats why I love the mounting system they use on the zalman 9500 and 9700's. They might not be the best heatsinks in the world but damn are they easy to install. :)

Cooling off atm. Finishing work and going back home in a bit, take a jog with the wifey, make some shrimp stew, drink a little riesling...and then i'll take a deep breath and decide if want to try again with the install w/out mobo removal, reinstall w/mobo removal, or slap the freezer 7 back on there.

reviews say it should be more than possible to put this thing on w/out mobo removal, as it uses the same mounting system that intel uses (and w/out a copper core, it isn't as heavy as you'd expect).

it's a royal payneinmyashe trying to secure the thing in the case though, due to the large wingspan of the cooler...

maybe i'll post back tonight with some good news.

or maybe i'll buy a dell.

The Intel cooler is a pile of junk and I recommend not using it. It puts so much stress on the socket it bends the motherboard.

i finally got the si-128 + ac 12 fan on there. ohmiword...how quiet...how cool...

ok, i'm clicking along at 3.15 ghz/1.425v. need to check and make sure i'm w/in acceptable parameters.

edit: looks like it's safe up to about 1.5. may need to back off to 1.3 for longevity...i don't plan on upgrading again....ever....well....for a long, long, long, long time. :)

nah. i'm set for 1.5 years, as long as nothing blows up. need to be working on my dissertation in the next few months, anyway. :)

edit: in LOTRO, i notice there is NO more "hitching" between when i move my mouse and when the scenery changes. haven't tried bf2 yet...but...i mean...that's what the forum is for...right...?

guess i'll have to give 'er a go. i'm really, really liking the e6600 so far. whether or not i like it to the tune of $165 remains to be seen...depending heavily upon how much my pd 915 goes for on ebay.

edit 3 (or so) benchies still coming. i'm enjoying lotro with no hitch right now. really...really...starting to believe that c2d lived up to hype. maybe quad isn't in the much-to-distant future. have to wait until there's software for it...that i'll also be willing to buy...but...hey. i'm a c2d believer now.

next gpu will be DAAMIT, though. dammit. i can't see not supporting the "other" guy when their gpu gets cheaper.

Benchmarks!

comparison is between pentium d 915 @ 3.75ghz and e6600@3.1ghz, 2gb ram @ 1066mhz (pc2 8500)

E6600 at the bottom. ~25% jump. not shabby, if i can fetch $50 or $60 for my pd.
