Read my sig... Of course you don't need to get 4gb of ram, and prolly go with a XX50 c2d instead... or better yet a Q6600. But for basic build, follow my rig from 5months back =D

I didn't think I'd have time to further explain what to look for in a new rig but now I can...

CPU - E6600 Q6600 or a XX50 C2d.

CPU cooling - Artic freezer pro 7, zalman or thermaltake

RAM - 2gb 667mhz ++

Vid card - 320 mb gts or higher if you wish. Dont want DX10? X1950 pro or 7600++ (7600 will play bf2 all high but weak.)

HD - Try to get a 74 GB raptor. Otherwise, a 100-500 GB 7200 SATA2 HD is fine depending on how much space you need for storage.

DVD/CD burner by liteon/panasonic.

A mobo similiar to mine if you want future proof solid. 122-CK-NF68 A1 is my mobo by EVGA.

Xtreme gamer/music sound card. (optional)

Antec 900 case is great cooling out of the box.

OC you C2D with your aftermarket fan. Very easy. If you buy the mobo I suggested, I know it comes with a very easy BIOS that allows even a rookie to OC easily (as I was and prolly still am Lol)

well.. iunno really ..700.00? . thats not including vid card - or PSU ( i have a new one ) - or OS cost of course.. just the MoB-HD-DVD-CPU-RAM. ETC.I would like to get a MoB thats sli and dx10 compat though. so if i upgrade later it will just be by adding another vid card and run 2 x sli..

The Mobo doesn't matter, they should all be Dx10 compliant the issue is going to be with your GPU. If the info in this link is reliable

then it would seem Microsoft is about to give everyone and anyone that has bought Vista and a Dx10 card a right royal screwing. If you're wanting to build a rig to play Dx10 games then leave it for now and wait until Vista Sp1, Dx10.1, compatiable cards and Crysis have all been released, if you want to play Dx9 games then the parts mentioned by the guys above is pretty near the mark.

i was reading up on the 8800's but the range of GPU Mhz and MEM and PRICE is just cunfusing as hell..

i will be ( more than likely ) getting WIN XP as the OS again on this new pc. Vista has too many probs and is still too expensive in my opinion right now..

whats the fastest PCI-e card for 200-400 $ ? or what card(s) do you suggest, period?

the fastest right now im pretty sure is a 8800 ultra. for 200-400 i think you may be able to get a 8800 gts

Good picks.

EVGA also has a 90 day step program offered for your video card so if you want a better card you can upgrade it.

As for the mobo's your choosing.

First of all, the EVGA has 2 true 16x PCI-E ports and a 3rd PCI-E port for w/e vs the Gigabyte mobo which is indicated that it only has 1x 16x PCI-E and a 4x PCI-E. If you plan on using SLI one day, go with the EVGA board. The EVGA board is capable of 1200+ mhz ram vs a OC limit of up to 1066mhz on the Gigabyte.

Another thing you can take advantage of is dual ethernet cables. One will be dedicated to packet inflow and the other outflow. This is said to reduce load on your cpu and overall increase performance. I wish I could comment on this but that is one thing I am not able to take advantage of on the EVGA mobo.

However, the Gigabyte has 2x more SATA2 ports...

The EVGA board you listed is the exact same board I have and I love it. My only cons on it is that one of the fan header ports is defective but you can't always have perfect manufacting. I didn't bother to return it because I didn't want to wait any longer to build my computer. Back to topic, it will OC very well too. You will have no problems in setting your FSB to 1500. I haven't ventured much past 1511 simply because there is no need really, but I'd imagine you could as it is a solid board (good quality).

EDIT. I just noticed you had another thread currently active on roughly the same topic and I suggested that gigabyte mobo to you in it. I didn't see that it only has one 16x pci-e vs dual which is what I mentioned in the other thread. Still, for a cheaper board its not all that bad. Be honest, I didn't look too hard over it as at the time it seemed like a budget build. Looks like your on track though.
