I like this psu--it has been running everything (overclocked) very well for the last year. Plus a single 120mm fan keeps things cool and quiet. That is, if you can do a rebate. If you hate rebates, then other options make better sense.

upon further review: memory is good; i prefer pioneer, sony, samsung optical drives in that order, to lite-on but lite-on should be fine.
8800gts + win XP? my money would either get Vista for the two extra shiny rocks that DX10 will show you...someday...and the raw !!!!wow!!!! factor that translucent windoze will give you, or I would get a cheaper dx9 card and save my money. i don't quite understand getting a dx10 card and dx9 os.
and that's the ugliest case on the planet, but there's no accounting for taste. :P
last thought--save yourself $10 and buy that cooler from my favorite li'l company:

no one will ever see the case except me and 1 or 2 friends. so "looks" isnt all that important of an issue to me at this time. its more so about $ and compatibility right now.
i have a few questions ..
1. how/why is the HD you recomended faster than the one i was thinking about? I mean i'm sure its prolly better if you say it is but i was just wanting to know the "spec" differences. arent they the same "speed" wont they both allow my pc to run games the same?
2. im only spending 90.00 on a OEM version of WinXP.. i cant see paying 400.00 for vista right now with all the problems its having, and also it would hold up my build by a mnth or so to save the $$ for vista.im not very knowledgable about "OEM" OS's but if i buy an "OEM" vista 64 then i wont be able to get any type of updates or support or anything will i? and ive read alot of bad reviews on the vista thats out now.
anyone know where to get WIN Vista for the cheapest price?
the seagate has a five year warranty. the seagate has a 16mb cache (meaning it can store twice as much in the "fast" part of the drive versus the wd 8mb model). the seagate is a 250gb'er, the wd is a 160gb'er. for another $20...it's a no-brainer, in my mind.
i really, really like the 8800gts. so much so that i'd say what the heck. build a dx9 system with a dx10 card if you can get the os that cheap.
what resolution are you running at? what size monitor? maybe i missed that info? hit us with it again, please...

i like the 8800gts, i really do. but putting a 8800gts into a comp to push a monitor that runs at 1024x768 is like putting a 350 cubic inch engine into into a pinto. sorry. into a hyundai.
if you plan on "stepping up" you should step up now at sale prices, not according to evga list prices. system has relevant info. pm him.
8800gts: it will play dx9 games wonderfully (edit: and of course, it's dx10 ready, for the extra shiny rock factor that gamers the world over are craving to spend money on). there is no better card, except the gtx or (in some games) the hd2900xt, which i can't recommend due to power/heat issues. gts will play games wonderfully...but so will lots of other (much cheaper) cards at 1024x768. a new monitor and a slightly lower gpu is what i would be shopping for, for the best-looking gaming possible for the same budget, all things being equal.
someone will chime in tomorrow with why your resolution/monitor size has lots to do with what video card you choose, or i will. it's one a.m. right now, though, so i've got to go to sleep.
I am going to get an lcd monitor in a few months ( $$$ )...i can deal with the lesser visual quality ( less pixels ) till then..as long as i get super performance ( high fps !!! ) with a crt using the above rig then i dont mind at all using a crt for a few more months till i get the $ for an lcd..
i did some research on the "step up" program for EvGa .. it seems you dont get a good deal after all.. you only get partial credit for your old card and have to pay more for the new card than you have to elsewhere.. is that right?
my only real worry with the gts is the 320mb memory. would 2 gts's in sli run twice as good? i mean would the memory be dbl'd etc.?

i found vista 64 on newegg for less than 100.00 . can someone help me out here and tell me if this vista is ok for dx10 and my rig above?
it doesnt have any service packs, If i buy this one will i still be able to update it with the latest service pack updates?

sure. it will go blazing fast. at resolutions up to 1600x1200 in most games, with most of the eyecandy dialed up (still no grass in oblivion without a texture-reduction mod...but that's one game)

i've never heard of that psu company. subjectively, i would do a little more research on it before i plugged a $1500 setup into it. from a technical perspective, 30A on the +12v rail ought to be enough, though:

edit: ^ those are my favorite because i like quiet computers. cheaper options would be fine, too.
you get TWO SATA connectors on that PSU, which means if you ever want to plug in another SATA drive, be sure and get a 4-pin molex-to-SATA power connector. i personally hate SATA opticals as primaries/onlies...but you shouldn't have any problems with it, or your build overall.
edit 2: except you're threatening to make my eyes bleed by pairing a high-end c2d + 8800gts with a 17" monitor.

WTH is wrong with a 17 inch LCD monitor? I used a 15 in crt forever.. then got a 17 in crt.. im still using that one at this very minute.. i have never had an lcd monitor mainly because i never really saw the need for one..until now.. from what ive read the 8800 does better on pc's with LCD MONITORS (with lower refresh rates) than on a crt with default rates ( 60? ) Thats the only real reason i even got an lcd this time....Higher FPS ( that comes with lower resolution ) Is for more important to ME than having freaking 9999 x 9999 resoution.. and truthfully ive gamed at 800 x 600 and 1024x768 for 15 yrs and I its never made me say - "ewww"... I mean granted 800x600 gets pretty blocky , but i havent used 800x600 sine cs 1.6..... 1024x768 has been just fine for me for 6 - 7 yrs.....But given the issues with the 8800 and the "quirks" or w/e it is said to have with crt's , i have opted for a 19 in lcd ( for under 155.00.. **SHIPPED FREE** ) I hate widescreen monitors ( for gaming ) anyway.. My Best bud has one and games look wierd if they even fit right at all... second - i dont have alot of money to blow on overkill.. so if the 19 inch monitor will do the job then thats what im getting ........plus the less pixels the more fps you get anyway right? almost every other review on the 8800gts says its not good for high res monitors..( i.e. - widescreen ) so i am happy with the above.. IF IT WILL WORK.....

19" is a better choice than 17", but the 12ms response time on that monitor is very slow.
If you can get a 7900GS for just about the same price as a 7600GT why would the 7600GT even be recomended. I just don't get it. The 7600GT isn't nearly as good.
