    Dual Core Question

I'm a pretty hardware savvy person, but I'm new to dual cores. I'm planning on getting the Core 2 Duo E6600 and it says the clock is 2.4Ghz, does that means its 2.4Ghz combined between the two cores or 2.4Ghz on each core? Thank you very much for any information.

well... it doesn't quite work like that. You don't just add them up, but, in effect, both cores are running at 3.4ghz.

How would you do it then?

                  2 cores running @ 3.4ghz 3.4ghz x 2?

So how do you find out about how fast it's running?

The frequency its running at cannot really be measured as there is nothing to compare it against.

what are you comparing its speed with?

Well, if i say the speed is 5.0ghz, is that fast?

If so, what is it fast compared to?

Compared to like the average processor. In the grand-scheme of things, would it be considered fast?

Oh, yes it would be considered fast, very fast.

The point im trying to get across is that you cannot compare a processors performance in terms of its frequency. For example, a 1.8ghz Core 2 Duo E6300 will run considerably faster than a 3.0ghz Pentium 4 as they are different architectures
