Tech Question reguarding RAM

Hi all,

I'm looking on putting together a new rig and want the option of running vid cards in SLI in the future. I was eyeing up this RAM:

but noticed it isn't "SLI certified" like other RAMs are. Does this really make a difference or is it just a gimmick?

Otherwise I'd go with this SLI certified RAM for slightly more:

Thanks for any help you guys can offer. Any other rig-building tips you might want to share are welcome as well.

As far as I know it just optimises it slightly...so you don't need it as such.

It's a marketing gimmick. Supposedly the RAM is "tested for compatability in a SLi environment." Yeah, whatever. Next we'll be seeing SLi certified keyboards.

SLI Ready Memory is also known as EPP Ready (Enhanced Performance Profile). Anyways, the ram you first mention is EPP Ready. The second set is also ...I think I would research with the manufacturer, if works with your chipset. EPP ready is not really a gimmick as such. In a nutshell, certain sets of ram have an extra chip that contains overclocking profiles based on factory testing of RAM with certain motherboards. What this will allow you to do, is to auto overclock your ram without manually changing settings up to a factory recommended standard. You can squeeze more performance out of the ram when setting it to normal specs. A gimmick, maybe, really depends on your board.

SLI RAM allows easy overclocking with Nvidia Nforce chipset based boards such as the 680i and 650i mobos. It allows the user to overclock the voltage, speeds, CAS latencies etc... with one switch, thus removing the need to do them individually. This means that overclocking is easier as there are less things to possibly go wrong.

Zalman released a Nvidia certified heatsink fan. Wtf? what does Nvidia have to do with CPUs (apart from chipsets.)

:drools: would that make gx2 keyboards in sli (total=4) a hands and elbows solution or hands and feet?

And what ever happened to the wonderful idea of bolting two 80C gpu's within millimeters of each other anyway?

they took 7900GT's, plonked them in SLi and underclocked them to refference speeds.

They then sold the 7950GT, the same card but with 100 MHz more on the core refference (and from people like gainward, 120 MHz) for half the price of the GX2 - SLi them and you get less heat, less noise faster cards and your wallet feels the same

Hey NATESOR I think you should look around a bit more man.

this ram is 5-5-5-15 pc8500 (same speed at the ones your showing) with the EPP and SLI cert if you want that for a lower price!

its $170 with a 40$ mail in rebate.

There is prolly cheaper too but I like OCZ...

EDIIT: errr I didn't see the rebates - it would be the same price as your patriot sticks but you got the SLI sticker on a pair of OCZ sticks =D. Can't go wrong with stickers can you?
