    Re: Nvidia 8600 DX10 out now !!!

The 8600/8500/8300 is where nvidia WILL make their money.

Not being funny ATI havnt released there cheaper card yet as i suspect the R600 will not be cheap and the 8600 will be an alternitive for people looking for DX10. But I see it better to pay £100 more for an 8800GTS where the performance will be 50% better or so. As watching the 8600 use its own DX10 demo it was painful to watch.

also, this chart is posted over in the 2142 forums under a thread of the same name as this one that shows a framerate comparison using BF2. The 7950 is significantly better than the 8600 there.

I'm quite happy for now given that there is no real reason to have DX10 yet...by the time that becomes more of an issue the prices will be down enough to justify a higher end purchase.
wow i was expectig the card to be a bit better then that

ATI is transitioning to a smaller fabrication process, which is expected to account for better price/performance when compared to similarly performing competitors, and also to potentially lower cost of ownership and the annoying fact that cooling high end cards now requires connecting a category 1 hurricane to an available molex. With the smaller fab, ATI really is pushing the edge to deliver a cheaper, better product. Predictably, it is rumored that they are encountering yield issues with the 65nm chips.

They are also looking to put a crimp in aegia's bit'ness model, as the "physx" type calculations will be done by the gpu.

Course, the market being what it is, nVidia can raise the launch prices of all their oober-sweet 86/5/300 series cards to front load the profits and then subsidize drastic price reductions when ATI enters with competing products. Back when AMD was king for a day, they could have manipulated their CPU prices to help subsidize lower ATI prices, or offered high volume, marginally profitable "GPU/CPU package" deals to retailers/pre-builders to up their market share. The razor thin profit margins being what they are over at AMD, they are probably not in a position to significantly subsidize ATI's newest offering.

At the end of the day, if AMD/ATI can't iron out their production issues soon, and don't put some steam behind R600 (and other advanced 65nm parts) they may end up losing significant amount of market share while all those shiny green boxes at Best Buy are screaming "!!!DX10 V1STA GAMING!!! ACCELERATE YOUR PWNZORING TO THE NEXT LEVEL!!!" in the general direction of all the wee 133t con$um0rz.

This card cant to anything with Dx10 rendering , most likle to run Crysis at 15 FPS the most . And adding little money you can buy new 8800GTS 320mb .
Its not bang for the buck to me

Now that I've seen the prices at NewEgg, I am even more disappointed. They want $230 for the GTS model...that IS the same price as the 8800GTS 320mb after rebates...SAME price!

              Way to go nVidia.

I'm totally thinking about buying one, but not for gaming.

This looks great for us htpc users, once the price drops a bit.

Maybe. Need a massive cooler w/out a fan to justify the cost (edit: a sliding scale) for an htpc build.

If you can play BF2 at 1600x1200 everything high with 4xaa and get an fps of around 45.2, then this card is doing well. You must remember most people will not be playing at these resolutions, they will most likely play at 1024x768 or 1280x1024, playing at a lower res will increase their fps dramatically.

So from my perspective this card has done well for a budget piece.

That is a GT, not a GTS. The cheapest GTS is $194...
                          .
                          .
                          .
As for being able to play BF2 at 1600x1200 with 45.2fps..."fine" for today, but the people buying these cards will most likely NOT be upgrading for at least another year or two.

In that time frame it will suffer greatly and require another upgrade(9600GT/S?), which when doing a cost analysis probably would exceed the initial higher cost of the greater card on day one(8800gts/x).

wait, when the R600 comes out it will smash the 8800.

lol. When it comes out. ATI has changed that date multiple times... hell, nVidia is killing them on DX10. They have been for a long time as well. I like both brands... but nVidia was out first... you snooze you lose.

But a 7950 GT is doing almost 2x the FPS for the exact same price, which is the problem.
