exactly how many Amps do you suppose, then that the 8800gts is going through, given that the mfg suggests a minimum of 400W and >26A on the +12V rail for the system.

I'm curious, but I'm also tired. Make you a deal: we'll find out tomorrow, at the latest.

edit: 'til then, i'll refer you here, for empirical data:

X6800 is around 75 or 6.25A so that leaves 19-20A for single 8800GTS and rest of the system components.

We know from Anandtech testing that a single 8800GTX uses approximately 10W more at idle and 20-30W more under load than a 8800GTS http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2873
'course, that one is for the gtx. Here's a tidbit of basic 'puter circuitry, courtesy of whiteknight something or other i dug up on ye olde' internets'.

"Put it this way. The 8800 GTS plugs into a pcie 16x (or x8) slot and has ONE pcie power connector. That means it can draw a MAXIMUM of 150 watts - as each provides up to 75 watts max.

Divide this by 12, and you get 12.5 amps on the +12 rail. Even presuming a 20% flux, for overclocking, etc. that is still only 15 amps. But unless you really overclock it, you won't even hit the 12.5.

That is why quality in more importan than quantity. Nvidia and oems give bigger numbers than necessary to help account for poor quality.

26 therefore is for the whole system."

first, take a look at this http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/T...PowerExpress/3 Single 300W cheap PSU powering 2x1900XTX + other stuff.

8800 GTS has one PCI-E power connector which means it can take maximum of 75 watts through that connector (75W=6.25A) plus power through PCI-E slot, another 75W absolute maximum. Total around 100W.

A good 400-450W psu will have plenty of power to run C2D+8800GTS system. If you suspect your PSU does not have enough power grab a multimeter and measure 12V lines in load and idle. If difference is too big, you need a better PSU.

I'd go for E4300 or E6300, both are crazy overclockers, E4300 slightly faster. For 6300 you need a mb capable of high FSB's, P5B Deluxe will do fine. P5N-E might be good for 4300. E4300 will reach over 3 Ghz.

For optical drive this might be good. Sata cable so you don't need any IDE cables anymore.

And for gaming, memory doesn't really matter. Any DDR2 667/800 will be fine. But remember, if you choose E6300 and want to reach high clocks FSB will go over 400, close to 500 maybe, which means memory must be able to do at least twice the FSB. In memory world, all that matters is the chip used in sticks. Here you can view some DDR2 chips.

Did you even read the article. Yeah it was running it for the time being with these side effects...

But while it was running you could hear electrical noises coming from the PSU, also the fan was running very loud at its maximum speed, yet the PSU was very hot to the touch.
The 12V line was already quite low at idle with 11.87 V. But what is more scary is that during peak load it dropped down to 11.16 V which is clearly outside of the ATX specification (minimum 11.40V). The huge power draw number of 686W is because the PSU is running completely overloaded. Since it was never designed for this load the losses due to inefficiency are very high.
How long do you honestly think that thing would have kept going? That PSU was drawing 686 watts while only putting out 400 watts which is horrible efficiency even for a non active PFC unit. I would have given it a day before it took that system down.

I don't understand why people would spend 300-$600 on a CPU or Video card and then spend less than $100 on an electrical power source that will connect to every expensive component in your PC. You guys recommending the minimum especially not made by a good company are giving really bad advice.

Best PSU for your money right now:

Has Etasis internals, rock solid rails, and you won't run into the problem of a rail suddenly being overloaded and cutting the power supply off when you may have a mere 8A load on the other rail which is common on multi-rail systems.

For comparison the OCZ Gamestream 600W for almost $115 with only 35A on the combined 12V rails and horrible 12v ripple.

My suggestion was on the last page... so yeah. Unless someone has an issue with that (so far noone has said anything), that's what I would go for :)

And I don't think you will be able to fit a 680i mobo or an e6600 into the budget... look at the setup I have on the top of page 2.

Go with knght's advice, and avoid the Case/PSU combo megawhompertoo posted, it's not the best thing for your system.

Just for my opinion on the PSU thing... I have recommended that Antec Sonata/Smartpower setup before, but hopefully not on the higher end systems, especially when there may be overclocking involved.

Which is understandable, since it is a fairly good deal, however, it most certainly doesn't apply here.

this is the computer i have at the moment. i was wondering if the 8800gts plus a new 700w power supply would work in this untill i gotthe money to ungrade everything else and get a new case???

it will work, so long as there is room for a gpu with a slot-wide cooling solution eating up one PCI port, and so long as sony hasn't done anything proprietary with regard to their psu (i.e., verify that the psu is a standard modular unit, and verify that the mobo uses a standard 20 (or 20+4) power acceptor).

obviously, the card will benefit from being in a system with more and faster ram, and you'll get another nice bump when you upgrade to a better CPU.

You could get rid of the expensive case and use the on-board audio, a smallerhard drive and save another $200-$250. This is reffering to the above system.
