Anyone have any real world IDE RAID experience?

Im not looking to go out and buy 2 WD 74 gig Raptors, so fanboys need not apply here...

I DO however have a couple of drives laying around (IDE) and Im not against re-installing a few things to try out a RAID 0 setup - mainly to see if it gains any performance for BF2. My Mobo comes equipped with a raid controller, and ive noticed that load times - even with 2 Gb of Ram are kinda long at high settings.

If any of you have tried running in a RAID setup, let me know what kind (if any) performance gains you saw while using this setup.

If it works fairly well, I might grab a couple of SATA drives and make a proper array.

Not really that big of a diffrence. I ran 4 drives in IDE RAID on my old AXP system, and before my raptor I has 2 SATAs in RAID on this system. IMO the extra risk isn't worth it. But you may want to try anyway and see what you think.

My RAID is on SATA already on the board itself.

I dont know about IDE's but you might want to consider that IDE's are being cut down on new boards and somewhat pushed out the door as obselete.

I run 3 raptors in raid 0 and im first in the game. It makes a huge difference.

Yes, I've been looking at high-end motherboards lately and notice many only have one PATA channel now (i.e. 2 drives).

There were some tests done a while back with level loading times in various games and ATA RAID 0 made very little difference. They were all memory- or CPU-bound. (See the thread twsmit posted for one example).

I'm frequently one of the first into a level and I'm on a 5400 rpm notebook drive but I have 1.5 GB RAM.

Did you happen to test 2 vs 3? I tried 3 once a few years back didn`t notice much of a difference between 2 vs 3 in 0.

I want Mode 5 RAID but it is hard to find boards that support it.

My first array is with 2 37G raptors so I took a keen interst in this one. I should add, for those who claim there is too much risk with raid 0, I`ve had these running like this for a good year and a half now, no problems.

Thanks for the responses guys... I think if I do try it it'll be RAID 0+1 just for the redundancy. I now have the sneaking suspicion that I may have slipped a 5400 rpm drive into the machine on the last windows reload, so I may be dragging the other 2 drives down a bit (damned IDE)...

It makes a difference when the server reloads the map, @ other times the mem makes the most difference

raid 5 is slow because it needs to exor all the data it writes.

I believe the reason you load so much quicker is the fact that it's a Raptors and not a 7200 drive.
