It has to be said that they use water cooling so that may tripple the actual costs. Also they overclock the intel to it's max and compare it to stock clocked other cores.

That said, it's still impressive. Let's see if someone can reproduce this.

Yeah, just read that this morning too. They were able to use that Zalman cooler up to 3.8ghz I believe. That is still hella good for 130 bucks in my book. Of course you do have to figure in a more expensive motherboard and RAM that will let you do all that, but it still beats payin 1000 bucks for a processor...

It's impressive, but is this a surprise to anyone? There have always been lower clocked "value" chips that turn into remarkable overclockers.

-300mhz Celeron A
-1.6ghz P4 Northwood
-2500+ Barton
-3000/3200+ Venice
-Dual core Opteron 165/170


Anyways, its a good deal if you want to OC and need dual core, however if you read the article, the CPU draws a tremendous amount of power, and generates lots of heat.

Therefore an enthusiast can benefit from this "cheap" chip, but someone on a truely tight budget probably can't.

Your going to need a good solid motherboard, good PSU, 3rd party cooler, and of course some luck and alot of knowledge and hardwork. And if your going for the 4ghz+ your going to need to put a few hundred USD down for watercooling.

I see this article and this CPU as the cheapest dual core value for overclocking, and something someone can get now, as an eventual stepping stone to conroe. But its not something to be taken lightly, and will not provide an automatic 4ghz to every random n00b on the internet.

If anyone is dead set on Conroe, and wants to buy now, this might be a nice stepping stone, otherwise we are still talking about a hot as hell .90nm netburst chip, nothing special except the price. And remember at stock speed this sucker is pretty darn slow.

Overclockers have been getting over 4Ghz on air with Intels since they first realeased prescott for socket 478. I don't see the big deal? Just because some retard at Tom's did it?

A good stepping water cooled X2 will hit 3-3.2Ghz easy and easily beat any overclocked Intel in gaming.

Those benchmarks are made at 1280 x 1024 which is video card bottlenecked and really prove nothing about the actual performance of the processors. They need a lower res that creates a CPU bottleneck to really see which processor is best like 1024 x 768. Leave it to Tom's to make a decieving article like this.

It's a great price for the performance though. Hope AMD takes not or they'll get slaughtered with the budget build market.

I'm here to add an actual objective arguement which seems lacking around here. Never take a review or article at face value. I don't even see why people take Tom's garbage seriously.

If a couple of you knew anything about computers you'd know that you can't compare 3D processor performance at a resolution that creates a bottleneck at the video card.
