    New News Posting Setup

    As some of you may have noticed, the previous news setup TGN had has been changed. The old news setup we used included having a separate news section under each of the different system forums, in addition to a separate forum for general gaming industry news. The new setup we've chosen to go with merges all the separate news forums into one news area, located here:

    With any changes to the website, some people may dislike it while others will love it. Let me give you the reasons why we changed to the new setup.

    The biggest reason we changed to one news area is to better organize the news that we're publishing. Instead of posting a news thread and duplicating it into each of the other forums that it applies to, the news will be posted in one place, in one thread. This eliminates having multiple topics open covering the same exact piece of news, as well as gets rid of the closed duplicate threads being linked back to the original thread so that you can comment on the news. This means less clicks for everyone and a much better organized way of publishing the news.

    The gaming industry forum is setup with a prefix system. This prefixes will clearly show you what system/console the news pertains to. If it deals with more than a single system, you will see prefixes like PS3/360 or Multi. Overall, it's a clear way to see what news you're interested in. If you want to only look at PC news, then all you have to do is look under the display options and click on a PC prefix and hit show threads. It will then sort the news and only show topics with a PC prefix. The same can then be done for any of the systems. So if you are the type of person which still likes to have that separation between the news, this is your way to do that.

    In summary, the new setup is to both ease our users when viewing news as well as to make our job as news posters easier. We will no longer have to waste our time duplicating the same topic multiple times, which will give us more time to post news. And the user will no longer have to waste time thread hopping to get to the one open thread where you can comment.

    One last note, a new main page design will be put in place very soon to compliment the new setup. For all the latest gaming news from now on, please visit here!

    Excellent. :thumbsup: I know a lot of people have asked for this over time. Glad to see TGN was able to find a way to implement it.

      I agree that this is much better than seeing 8 duplicate threads in 8 different sections.

      Good work, gents.

        Maybe color the prefix's?

          I like your thinking. I'll take a look at them and do a little messing around to see if we can't get some nice colors going.

          PS3 == Red
          360 == Green
          PC == Blue
          Multi == Black

          How's this sound?

          Not sure what to do for Wii, DS, or PSP. But keeping them as they are (black) sounds good to me for now.

                If the colors make it look like a technicolor rainbow, then either try just coloring in the [brackets] or using slightly different shades of gray/black so it stands out but doesn't jump on the screen?

                That or you can just try images :)

                    I see the colours are already in use. :) Looks good to me so far. I don't think it's "rainbow-ish" with just the 4 colours used, and none of them being too bright.

                      Yeah, I already tossed up a few colors already. Spawn can certainly tweak them to whatever, I just wanted to see how they'd turn out.

                      They don't look too bad, right guys?

                        Certainly not. Colors can be good instead of just bold because the bold just mixes in with the thread if it's unread. But yeah, I will tweak them a bit later today and add a few more for the others. Nothing too crazy though, don't worry!

                          It looks great to me. It makes it really easy for me to just home in on PC news based on the blue. I was thinking, though. (Yeah, dangerous stuff :shock:) Maybe an orange/brown or something could be used for news that is revelant for multiple platforms? It's currently too easy to just zone out everything that is black or green or red. You know, because all I really care about is the PC. :p

                          EDIT: Either you were already doing it while I typed this post, or you are really quick!

                            I just tried orange for multi and it was too bright...so I'm going to try some custom colors later to make it look perfect. I'll post in here when they've been updated so you guys can check them out.

                              Okay guys, check out the forum now for the prefix colors. I've used custom codes instead of the generic red, blue, green that was in there before. The colors are cool and not too vibrant that they burn your eyes out when looking at the page...yet they are still distinguishable and your eyes can easily see and know what color is what prefix.

                              Your thoughts?
