Re: TGN Podcast Episode #12 Released

Steam is very unlikely to go down, it's the no.1 in digital downloads as it stands. if people are buying from less established services then they are running the risk of loosing their games. So what if Valve forced it's HL2 user base to use Steam? It's a very good idea to get one of the best first person shooters to use steam and then the huge amount of players looking at the steam catalogue.

I've never had an issue with re-downloading games from Steam, I've done it a few times with things like HL: DM, Source SDK base and Peggle Extreme. I think it's something people will start using progressively I bought Audiosurf for like £6 and I have no doubt I'll be buying bigger and more expensive games through steam.

    GJ again on the podcast.

I know that is where the future is headed, but I hate flipping have to remember another account name for Steam, Ubisoft, etc.

Also, I think the excitement of having the game in hand stems from my childhood. There wasn't anything greater than going to Toys R Us or Funcoland back in the day and walking out with that game in hand. Years later I still have that rush of buying the game and then rushing home to install it. I dont think I can get that high from a digital download

I know that feeling also, however, that feeling is short lived. The real joy comes from playing a great game, not looking at a cardboard box, plastic disc, and paper manual.

Yeah, but I like to wine and dine my games. I like to pick her up and check her out looking all good in that box. Get all excited cuz she looks hot sitting in my front seat. Sneak her down stairs and install her and then play that sweet sweet game. :gob_icon_censored:

I just dont get her home and say "Lets do it!"

Yeah, there is definately something satisfying about buying in store, and even ordering online, when the game comes and you rush to open the cellofane around the box unless you've bought it off eBay.

Torrenting (Which i don't condone) or Digital Downloading may keep you essentially the same files, but the first doesn't usually work online and the latter usually gets patched later than the store bought games.

So, aside from the giddys, there are other advantages.

There's also just having the physical box on your shelf or desk so that you can see it. It's a visual reminder of what's available when you're in the mood to play, just like when you want to watch a movie and look over the DVD's you have. Especially for older games that you might want to dig up and play again...if it's all digital, it's easy to forget what you have.

                  You know what I love?

I just love looking at all the CDs on my shelf. All 500 of them. If I did not have them on my shelf I would not remember what I had.

Just like iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp, and Zune Desktop, Steam and Windows Vista organize your games. You do not need to buy the game from Steam to have a shortcut in Steam. You can add any game shortcut you like to Steam. Windows Vista also organizes all your games in one location with the box art images included.

Come on guys, you are suppoe to be gamers. Gamers are always on the leading edge. We are ahead of the curve. You guys are talking like old men who do not want to give up their black and white TVs because color is just a passing fad.

First, I havent listened to the podcast yet, I wanted to comment on the posts already done. If my post doesnt match up with whats going on, Im sorry.

Leading edge isnt always that great. You get to be a guinnea pig most the time in troubleshooting problems. Steam is #1 on gaming download and I am new to it and these are the problems I have had:

                    1. Long delay in patch releases.
                    2. Problems with loading the Steam system itself.
                    3. Problems with games finishing a patch install.
                    4. Problems with backing up my game to put on a new PC. (backup thing seemed to have corrupted the games and I had to just re-download them)
                    5. Problems with Steam Updates.

Lets not forget when CoD was really going strong how Steam ran out of key codes.

Now if its an ISO I can download and make my own disk and it not rely on some backend software system, I am all for that.

I will by games I dont care about on Steam (old ones for fun), but my main games are going to be CD versions.

                      Crunch
Each of your points can apply to CD/DVD media:

                      1. Long delay in patch releases. Can happen with every game patch

                      2. Problems with loading the Steam system itself. Every gamer has had a problem loading a CD/DVD base game at some point

                      3. Problems with games finishing a patch install. Happens with CD/Base games all the time.

                      4. Problems with backing up my game to put on a new PC. Secure ROM - Nuff said.

                      5. Problems with Steam Updates. CD/DVD updates happen via downloads/updates. Do you want your patches mailed to you via CD/DVD. You get your game updates/patches, demos, and trailers via download, what is a few more GBs between friends?

You guys have to admit each of you has had a problem with a CD/DVD base game. No technology is perfect, but technology does change and become obsolete. Media base technology will soon be obsolete. Movies, Music, Games, and Books will all be Digital Only in the future. There is even talk that the next version of the XBOX will be digital only.

                      Resistance is Futile.

I just had a good feeling today. I went and bought a PS3 at Sears. And this morning a UPS package was waiting for me from EA with Battlefield Bad Company. I just opened the box, I bought it at 3 today and have been going crazy waiting till people went to bed so i can really get into it for the 1st time.

So I am so hyped right now. :yay:

If you would agree to come on the podcast that good feeling would continue. We need someone to talk about the PS3. None of the podcast crew has one.

Coming from the cranky guy who plays a few games a year and wont play a FPS online? C'mon now. It's ok to come out and play with us online with CoD4 or AoC or BF2142. You dont have to disconnect the network cable and play Crysis and Mass Effect all alone.

....... Wait for it guys......... Dre only likes "tactical" shooters and we all suck cuz it's all about our kill counts.
