From my prospective, to call this an “Interview” should be a term used very loosely. I found it a boring read after the second question.
The “conversation” you had with this individual seemed very one sided and in many incidences you seemed in awe over his abilities to do what he does.
Sorry, but that’s poor reporting and all you did is leave your readers hanging and misinformed.
True this individual represents a number of “virtual world” hated group of players, but the fact is that EA and many other game makers make great financial profits from the sales of hacks, cheat codes and “tips and tricks”. EA, Nintendo reported a 2004 net of $3.6 Million from “add-on” sundry sales of these products.
Readers of this article want to simply know… “why”?
The motivation (which is the real question you didn’t ask) for cheating can range from wanting to earn the awe of your friends, to wanting to ruin the game for other players, to wanting to have a heap of game currency to sell on eBay. It appears that there will always be someone that refuses to play by the rules.
As long as there have been games, there have been cheaters, and video games, particularly online games, are certainly no exception to this rule.
Online games have been a cheaters paradise in some ways because you can remain relatively anonymous, the technology is difficult to secure, and hacks tend to spread quickly over the Net.
Downloading a hack for a game and installing it on your system is a lot riskier than it used to be. The fact is, hacks have become notorious for spreading a malicious assortment of viruses, trojans, and spyware. Quite often the hacks don't work as advertised, the author attempts to charge money for them, and they infect your machine with a trojan in an attempt to steal account information.
To make a long story short, there is no honor among cheaters. It is ironic, however, that a cheater's worst enemy may wind up being... other cheaters! So, in a since – justice somewhat prevails for those of us who choose not to cheat.
At the end of the day, it's a lot more satisfying to win while following the rules than it is to win using some cheap hack or exploit.
And to justify the cheat or reason by any means…well, you’ve been won over by them. So, enjoy these new friends….or are they? Remember, they are cheaters.Comment

I’m impressed of the level of participation in responses that add value to the discussions.
I posted a response (my first in your forums) to your Dark Side article.
Please don’t read into it that I am cutting the article down or attacking GW's reporting skills. After my re-reads, I can see that you might think it….and I wanted to set myself clear with GW. I'm a strong and forward writer - and sometimes misunderstood....LOL....don't figure.
I’m a professional in media relations and sit daily doing exactly what GW did- provoke thought and prospective.
GW - If you felt in anyway dismayed by my response to your article, I apologize in advance.

Anything made by blizzard. My favorite game is starcraft/broodwar and have been playing it for years. (no, I am not korean..) I would hate to see anything happen to this game involving any serious cheats. We have even provided blizzard anonymously with private code and unpacked dlls for them to stop cheating. Sheep is also an avid starcraft player.

On their site they claim that the cheats are un-detectable by PB, but yet, several members of theris I found on Master Ban List - haha. The silly members used their in-game names to sign up to their forums too, most of them. Funny kids.Comment

well.. if he decides to watch over the MYIS tournaments ( 21cw etc etc ) i suggest he dig into the bf2statistics code....
since that is used to track stats for their tournaments :P

The Mind (or lack there of....) of a Cheater
Whenever you discuss cheating it is inevitable that one question in particular will come up. Why does the cheater cheat? There are several reasons that have come to light, that would account for why most of them do it.
While not all cheaters fit these, most do fall in somewhere for these three.
Peer Pressure: Their friends do it and so it is easier to justify doing it themselves.
Self-Esteem: Getting good scores and winning in a video game can be a boost to an otherwise low self-esteem; even if the win was not honestly attained. To some that is a minor detail. For some people being the best at something even if you have to cheat is better than never being the best.
The Better than Average Jerk: This is the guy who likes to come into the game and ruin it for everyone else. He often does not even try to hide the fact that he is cheating. Causing everyone else to have a bad experience is something that gives him a thrill of control.
There is one other group that bears mentioning. These are the cheaters who only use the cheats in servers specifically designed for this purpose. They only play with other players who are also using the same cheats. This adds a new dimension to a game that may have gone stale and/or adds more of a challenge. What these players do in this arena really is there own concern and most people would not care if this was how all cheaters played. But there are plenty who decide to invade non-cheating servers with cheats in use.
One last bit of information on the average cheater; most are in their teens and it is estimated that they are between 13 - 18 years of age.
To make sense of this we have to look at gamers in two categories:
1. The hardcore or serious gamer.
2. The casual or fun gamer.
The hardcore gamer is the one who plays the game often; they are in clans, and play competitively in ladders and leagues. They know and follow the gaming industry trends and have a good knowledge of cheaters. They have a vested interest, if you will, in the games they choose to play. Research, time and effort go into their next game purchase.
Because of the time as and money invested, the hardcore gamer is less likely to walk away so easily from a game due to cheaters. If they do walk it is the result of a long line of problems that are way overdue for fixing. These are the ones who will think twice before purchasing another game from the same developer or publisher.
The casual gamer plays only occasionally and often has less knowledge of the what is right and/or wrong in the game. If they encounter cheats or flaws in the game they are more likely to move along to some other game that catches their attention; losing interest sooner than the hardcore gamer. For obvious reasons, these are the players that the gaming companies hope to attract more of.
On average, most new PC games that have multiplayer capabilities are somewhere around $40.00 - $60.00 each. I have come up with a checklist of sorts for the games I buy. The first thing on the list right after multiplayer support is an anti-cheat system (preferably PunkBuster). My friends who would be considered hardcore gamers, also look for the AC to be in game right out of the box. Too bad some companies like to play the waiting game when it comes to an anti-cheat system.
In other words... they release the game, see how it does and then later decide whether or not to include an AC. This can cost the developer not only up-front sales but the community it manages initially gain dwindles due to cheaters. Implementing an AC prior to game launch is ALWAYS a good idea.
Conclusion
If all of the anti-cheat communities would band together and work to educate the gamers, the detrimental effects that cheaters have on games would be substantially reduced. Unfortunately, getting rid of cheaters completely will not be done until the server holds all of the game files. Until then, there will always be players who cannot compete competitively unaided by a cheat. Another key point is to educate young gamers. Just like with anything else, young people are easily influenced. If they get in with the wrong group of gamers and don't have access to information about cheating then they will go with what they know.
Game companies must work with the anti-cheat makers to have their applications kept up to date with those made by cheat makers and the anti-cheat systems must be working at their peak. This is something that server and game admins can ensure. In the end it comes down to simply sharing information with each other.
I think a cheat writer should be fined, sued and yes; even jailed every time one of his minions gets caught using one of his cheats.
If one word would be to size it up ...I would pick "piracy".
Fret not my brothers – global law will one day – make these “cheaters” pay. Thier freedom is only lasting on borrowed time.
Until then – well…just like the bugs on a windshield ….look past them.Comment

Just remember its a GAME, not a lifestyle.
I am not sticking up for EITHER SIDE on this statement, I just think people get worked up over the stupidest things.
Every single game WILL have hackers, no matter what anyone or any company does. Like he said in the interview, just have a watchful "admin", and play the game.Comment
