Re: Newly Released Battlefield 2142 Video

And people should really stop making false assumptions. Latest interviews state ETQW as being 32 players out of the box, but the devs have stated the engine doesn't have a limit, and can go 64 easily if mods want to do it (of course, lag might be an issue with higher numbers).

It will come down to gameplay, of course, but ETQW has insanely better graphics, and a much better engine. This IMO is really no contest, ETQW will win hands down.

Recently the Armed Assault team has been putting out more screenshots, seems the game is close to being finished. Now they just need to get the final details right with the publisher.

I think more significant research should be done into what weapons/vehicles might actually be like in 2142 or whatever. I highly doubt there will be walking robots. If they are going for some sort of realism in terms of equiptment that is. The invisibility thing looks like something that would be annoying...

This would be a good mod though. Or some sort of cheap expansion

Judging from the video (and this of course is open to misinterpretation due to quality): same engine "Refractor 2" with tweaks, some nice shader effects not in BF2, low polycounts by next-gen standards, not so nice graphics really, when you've got coming up stuff like ETQW and Unreal 3.0, same anims as BF2, since it's DICE you can bet ur ass it'll be buggy, since it's EA u can bet ur ass they'll crap all over the mod community, and since it's BF, the game is probably fun, arcadey, buggy (did i mention buggy yet?) and ultimately disappointing. And buggy.

Really, between FEAR recently, and ETQW, FarCry 2, Unreal 3.0, Prey, etc coming up, BF2142 is looking quite dated already. Everything looks boxy and bland, normal maps (as per DICE standard) are really subdued, the lighting pales in comparision to the other next-gen engines... and i won't touch EA or DICE with a 10-foot pole. Never again. And it'll be buggy.

              Did i mention buggy yet?
This is not right and they should not blacklist competition. How exactly did they blacklist and/or force you to shutdown anyways? Got a thread about what happened?

You guys should keep working on it; just to show some competition and not let them be so greedy with the competition. Now if there is some copyright that you guys are maybe breaking, than EA has a legitimate reason. Other than that maybe you guys might want to get the help of the community and others.

I played some of the Mech games MS came out with and there is no doubt the Japanese have made use of the Mech in Anime, games and lots of other things. So I don't see any copyright laws being broken.

"Microsoft released MechCommander 2 source code"
They just released their source code; maybe you guys might want to take your project there or maybe that engine is just too old. Don't give up please and let them force you out; I am sure others around here would back me up and saying that you have our backing as a community that we don't want this kind of this greedy business going on and encourage competition.

Anyone saying the robots would be cut must be scarcasm, because its the entire draw to the mod, and everythingrevolves around it.

"Do you know where your unstoppable 20-foot mech is?" - PC Gamer

Ill watch this one from the sidelines to see how it unfolds. I have a need to pilot walking robots, but if i wanted crappy models ill play a dated game sutch as Mechwarrior Merc.'s.

I feel bad for the Mech Mod being blacklisted because of this. Very unsportman-like.

Does this ET:QW game everyone seems to mention a lot have mechs'? I would appriciate an informative link if so.

It's definetly the BF2 engine reskinned, look how they reload in the end! I'm not sure if I'm with the game or against.

yeah..... .. wish more dynamic video.
Looks like they just tweaked skins on humvees + choppers a bit.

Enjoy 'Ghost in Shell' image cloaking technique but quite dissapointed by ground forces gear.

Surely in year 2142 - have little more sophisticated armour + weaponry[etc].

I would prefer they put time in up front to make great game instead of rush it out + have to constantly troubleshoot/patch it up afterwards. :hmm:

Maybe a Desert Storm or something from EA. Kosovo?

Desert Storm would be great! But man I WISH; Oh, how I wish there was a Battlefield: Red Storm Rising (based on the book by Tom Clancy). Now that is what I want, ALL OUT WAR WITH THE OLD RUSSIA !!! How GREAT would that be... :ar15:

Sorry Digital Illusions, but I think this is a bad move. You're saying to us you can slap on the Battlefield name to sell a product just like FIFA 2005, 2006, 2007 etc.

Oh and also, like mentioned above, it's obvious that the majority of staff have been working on this which is why we've had atrocious patches! Thanks a lot for that. Wonderful.

There is no way they can keep on schedule, they've proved that time and time again. Early 2007 is my bet.

The people that have said this is BFV for BF2 are spot on! It's clearly obvious a few new skins have been put on the models, same animations etc. The intro sequence itself doesn't exactly inspire awe like it's aiming for, a shoddy movie which is unusual as normally videos are a strongpoint for DICE, they do them well most of the time.

Who's to say that a lot of the bugs in BF2 won't reappear in this game?! Same engine, mainly I would guess same developers. If they won't fix bugs in BF2, they won't do it in the months after this games release.
                          I couldn’t possibly agree more!

I don't want to pre-judge BF:2142, but I have to be honest, I would have preferred a different theme. Science fiction is a personal favorite, but I don't have a need or want for it from DICE and EA. Why not a return to BF42?

With a more efficient and powerful graphics engine, we have the opportunity to see Vietnam represented properly. What about taking BF2 ten years into the future, with all the forces involved having access to entire naval fleets? You could create brand new locations (Alpine battles on slopes of snow and ice), new vehicles, new gameplay modes (AAS/Supply Line). All of which would be more appealing.

It also appears that DICE/EA are narrowing the scope of the BF:2142. A "battle for Earth" isn't really inspirational. Science fiction suggests grander realms and experiences, not to be limited by a single planet. Large scale space battles, ground based fighting on different planets...

I've been a big DICE/EA supporter for a long time now. I've defended them from many a flame, but recent approaches to game development has left me scratching my head. There are so many BF loyalists out there that it would be foolish to not provide them what they want. I don't think sci-fi is what they want.

Here's my post from a Battletech site about this.

Well, we weren't being bitter. I mean, we weren't pleased, but we were not making anything up. Here's a recap of what happened:

DICE were talking, privately, to selected mod teams, several months prior to the release of BF2. They were giving us advance info on polycounts, texture formats, early mapping specs, and the like. Hence why we could be working so much in advance of the release of the game.
MTS and several other teams made regular contact with Lawrence Brown, EA/DICE's Community Mod Liaison, and also leader of the mod "BF Pirates". This was back in October 2004.

January 2005: MTS is the first BF2 mod to be featured in a print magazine, two articles in PC Gamer UK, and two months later, PC Gamer US.

Around March, we did notice (through our friends in other teams) that support to us wasn't being the same as to other teams. Several teams knew of more stuff than we did, and had advance packets available. Communication with mr Brown was increasingly worse, because he seldom responded to us. Mind you, February/March 2005 was the original BF2 release date, but EA postponed it to June.

In May 2005, EA invited the main mods to a "Mod Community Day" at their headquarters, both in the US, and in the UK, all expenses paid. A few teams were invited, what EA considered the "best mods". We weren't. Inquiries on this weren't replied, as communication was virtually nonexistent.
On said Mod Day, a few people from the other mods asked one of the producers (dunno if Scott Evans or Jamil Dawsari) why MTS wasn't there, and their response was that they didn't believe in what we were doing, and didn't want to support us because they thought we couldn't do it. They also asked to keep this a secret from us.

We learned about this 2 months later, when a friend in another team, who was there, told us this much.

By then, the game was released, and we were basically blacklisted, no emails replied, and curiously, most sites in the community stopped responding to us, and stopped posting our news updates. Since the Mod Day was preceeded by a General Community Day, in which the heads of the fansites and newssites were invited there, it seems a bit suspicious at best.

It had been stated by Scott Evans (BF2 producer) in interviews that DICE wanted "walkers" (aka Mechs) in, but had to cut that feature at the last minute (from BF2). And that said feature could pop-up again later on, although when asked he didn't say if in xpacs or what else.

Now, i was the one who didn't make a big fuss on the several communities about MTS closing. I stated 5 points, and did very little explaining, precisely because i knew people would react badly, like Andrew did at the time.

Bottom line, i still don't know what's what, but it's long been rumoured they were working on a futuristic game, and in light of recent news (and one of my contacts in one of the main BF2 newssites as told me this new project will be running on a modified BF2 engine, not a new one), i find all this highly suspicious. Now, i ask again what i asked back then - how is any of this our fault?

It's fine for DICE not wanting to support us, it's their choice and right (although a few mods supported and other not is unfair "competition", so to speak).

It's a fact the BF2 engine can't handle Mechs (at least, the engine shipped on BF2, modifying the source code is another story...), because it can only have one skeleton for animation (aka the soldier).

Was it really so hard for DICE to tell us a simple "look guys, the feature was cut, it's not doable", and even "but we're working on something, so stay tuned"?

Why blacklist us? Ignore us completely, tell others to shut up, and tell sites to stop posting our news? They were under no obligation to support us, but why be such asses about it?

                              You be the judges.
Nobody cared back then, anyway, specially since most sites stopped carrying MTS news items. Why... well, i leave that up to you. We are now working on our own original sci fi universe.
