There is a tasty rumor going around the Interwebs today that an upcoming Xbox 360 update could free upwards of 1GB of storage space on the current dual-layer DVD format.
At present, the discs allow for only 6.8GB of storage out of 7.95GB total on the disc. This means that roughly 1.15GB is allocated to a special "DVD-Video partition" that is used for anti-piracy measures. Microsoft is about to begin testing a new disc that will free up most of that "lost" 1.15GB.
A brief period to signup just to have a chance to test the upcoming update have concluded, with beta participants slated to know if they've been accepted into the program within the next couple of weeks. Those selected will be shipped a new format disc to test out the update. It is rumored that the test disc will be a free copy of Halo: Reach. This update will not require anything more than an update on the part of the consumer, no new or additional hardware is needed!
With the removal of the on-disc anti piracy measures, Microsoft is also rumored to be adding content integrity checks (CVI) and other anti piracy measures that have not yet been revealed.
