Counter-Strike: Source Beta Launches! Adds Achievements, Domination System, & More!

As expected, a new beta for Counter-Strike: Source has officially kicked off!

Available immediately, Valve has launched an extensive update to Counter-Strike: Source, now in beta.

The update includes a host of new features and functionality developed in collaboration with Hidden Path Studios. These include 144 new achievements, a new domination and revenge system, player stats, and more.

This beta will run for a limited time, and once complete, the update will be deployed to all Counter-Strike: Source owners for free via Steam.

Server admins may download the dedicated server files via the HLDSUpdateTool using "-game cssbeta" in the command line.

Here are the current list of changes as noted in the CSS Beta section at SPUF:

- 144 achievements added
- New lifetime player stats and summary screens
- New match player stats and summary screens
- New end of round display with MVP and interesting fact about a player
- Updated scoreboard with new icons, visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures
- New cinematic death camera
- New domination and revenge system
- Added avatar icons to voice chat, scoreboard, and end of round display
- Incorporated many source engine updates

To all the naysayers, I just have one thing to say: Ha. Enjoy the beta everyone, we'll have updated news and impressions as the beta kicks into high gear.

TO THE SLOW PEOPLE THAT KEEP REPOSTING THESE SHOTS LIKE THEY'RE SOME SORT OF "BEAUTY" SHOTS OF THE BETA. IN CASE YOU HAVE AN INABILITY TO READ, THESE SHOTS WERE FOR BUGS THAT WERE REPORTED. IT DOESN'T TAKE A GENIUS TO FIGURE OUT THE BLATANTLY OBVIOUS.

Did a little bit of testing on a local listen server.

1. Bots do not work.

2. My flashlight does not work even after rebinding it.

4. The mini-map often incorrectly displays the "H" and the actual hostage rescue zone area:

5. Some maps feature a very bright green tint to the mini-map, Nuke and Militia as an example:

Not sure what all was carried over as issues from the original CSS as it's literally been a couple of years since I last really played.

pretty lame... after all these years you'd think they would do something better than just update it to the new engine.... Where the hell is CS2?

I had no idea that it was going to be a position limited beta. The PR made no mention of that when I put it up. Sorry guys. I'm trying to find out if that'll change.

Yeah? You going to leave it at that like every other ignorant troll or are you actually going to give some feedback to back your statement up?

It's one thing to go "OLOL IT'S CALL OF DUTY" and have reasons why, but so far, there's been jack and **** to back that statement up. Gameplay has not changed despite how much some are "saying" that it has.

So I pretty much called it. CS:S is getting the DoD:S treatment. Stats, achievements, and others frivolous additions with no significant or perceivable changes to gameplay. Yawn.

This looks good and is GREAT for free! Looks like I'll be playing a few months of CSS again once I can get in the beta/ it becomes official!

Steps:

1. steam://validate/260 - and wait for Steam to fully download the GCF.

2. Use GCF Scape to extract the cstrike_beta folder to the SourceMods folder (located in the SteamApps folder)

3. In the cstrike_beta folder, open GameInfo.txt

Change the SteamAppID from 260 to 440 (Requires TF2!)

Find the steam.inf file, rename it steam_.inf

Restart Steam.

Right click the new game in your Steam Library...

click properties. Set Launch Options, add in advanced Security Options: -insecure -secure
