Microsoft will officially pull the plug on the original Xbox Live in less than two hours from now, ending a near eight-year run for the service. As a precursor to the Xbox Live seen on the Xbox 360, the original offered up online multiplayer, demo downloads, full game downloads, in-game content downloads, and more.
While no specific reasons were given for the termination of the service, it was said some months back that the team "need(s) to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games." It is widely speculated that this move was also done in an effort to raise the Xbox 360 friend limit cap that was hard coded into original Xbox Live titles.
This termination affects both the original Xbox system and all Live enabled games running on the console, and the Xbox Originals titles that you are able to play on the Xbox 360. So, if you want to get one last round of Halo 2 in, you may want to hurry up and do so now.
