So? Lots of sales and places are often cheaper than Steam. Steam is like any other retail location. Sometimes they're cheaper, sometimes they aren't. Same with D2D and everywhere else.

It's the Holidays, what exactly are you expecting? And retailers do NOT really plan out when they're going to have sales just because a competitor had a sale end a few days earlier. That's just not how business works.

Mirror's Edge was $5.00 on Steam on 11/30. I bought a copy for myself, and one for my little brother. Technically, that makes Direct2Drive's offering precisely $0.05 cheaper, and you don't have to be running Steam at the same time.

Personally I don't mind running Steam (though some others may) and like the convenience of all my games organized/updated in one place, but the point still remains that this is a fantastic deal, and I'll be watching their site the next month to see if I can pick up anything else I've been wanting to play but didn't have enough time for to justify a higher cost. So far I've probably picked up 15 different titles near or below the $5 mark over the past two months, between D2D and Steam sales, many for me and a few as gifts. Quite nice for the patient gamer on a budget!
