Gamestop Given the Go-Ahead to Sell Modern Warfare 2 Early

Activision has apparently given GameStop the green light to begin selling Modern Warfare 2 early throughout stores in the Northeast United States. The reason that select stores in the Northeast were granted permission? Apparently it was because to stem the sale of the game from various "mom and pop" stores that already broke the street date.

GameStops in Northeastern states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio are selling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 early, granted special dispensation from Activision due to street-breaking mom-and-pop stores.

Here in Atlanta we still have to wait until Monday's midnight launch to pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but lucky folks in several Northeastern states are getting their copies earlier. According to a GameStop employee I spoke to in Bowling Green, Ohio, Activision granted certain area stores special permission to sell the game early, in order to stem the tide of lost customers picking their copies up early from local mom and pop stores.

So, if you live in the Northeast U.S. you may be able to go pick up your copy of Modern Warfare 2 earlier than you expected. Keep in mind that your mileage may vary.

I work at gamestop in Michigan, we where one of the few stores releaseing it early. Sold ALOT of copies today, people where going nuts.

I played the game, and it's fun, the animations look alot smoother than the last.

It's stupid though, they made it like call of duty: madden halo; dual wielding, text on your screen every second for every little "achievement" you do, silly guns, unrealistic guns. A puzzleing upgrade path which gives you .50 caliber rifles right off the bat. And the ommision of staple guns like the ak-74, 1911, and other guns seen often in todays modern warzones make you wonder what they where thinking.

You can defiantly tell it was geared towards their new xbox audience, with perks like "bling", "ninja", and stupid new things called "titles" which are basically avatars that among many other retarded things shows pot leaves, need for speed type ghetto cars, stupid saying's and cheap one liners. Feels like I'm playing a game geared towards 12 year old kids, instead of the mature feel to the previous modern warfare.

It's a shame, if they would have stuck with a more realistic approach like the first one I have a feeling I would want to buy it. Still to pissed about the whole dedicated server thing though to even give it another chance.

Activision says this was not the case. Activision contacted Kotaku today with an official statement regarding the situation in Bowling Green and surrounding areas: "Activision has not given any retailer permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 prior to the Nov. 10 street date. The company fully supports the Nov.10 street date."

<3 conflicting reports. It sure looks as though that official statement is crap if a lot of the retailers in the NE apparently got the go ahead nod to do this, and with a number of those retailers actually selling it already... well. Clearly someone is BS'ing be it Gamestop or Activision...

If the game is on Steam for PC for all, those people with hard copies will not be able to play. Just saying. :]

I sold exactly 196 copies at my gamestop within about an hour. We where given district manager approval. The reason being that wal-mart broke the steet date. Customers where canceling their pre-orders at gamestop to buy it at wally world.

To counter this SE Michigan authorized two stores to sell the game early to avoid more sales going to wal mart in the close proximity to the guilty store.
