TF2 Blog - Where Did All of Your Unlocks Go?

The Team Fortress 2 blog was just updated today with word on what is about to happen to those who cheat the system. Soon, those who used third-party means to unlock weapons and hats within Team Fortress 2 will have their "hard earned" possessions stripped from them.
Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process.

Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats.

The entry continues on to say that the team is still hard at work crafting a number of new sytems that will make the unlocking process easier. This includes the anticipated trading system and a method of "crafting duplicates into desired items."

Apparently there's groups who're trying to oppose this, such as this one.
JT's gone. At request, the group will stay as a testiment against Valve's item policy. We're no longer just Healers against Halos, but people against the item drop system in general. I idlet.
But I only got duplicates, all real unlocks earned from playing, so dont care.
Its not fair to took items just for idling...

(Im sure now ingame idling will start again)

This is a huge fail move by Valve. Very disappointed in this low-iq update.

LMAOS Valve treating its users as if it were a 3rd grade teacher.

I think people are upset because Valve is taking away unlockable content earned through 'idling' with the idler tool, and rewarding those who did not use it.

Re: TF2 Blog - Where Did All of Your Unlocks Go?

                    There's an update to this:

If you've completed an achievement for an item and lost all instances of that item you will get the item back tomorrow. We'll have a second query run that will fix-up that case.

                    --GreenMarine- (Valve Employee)

This should help with the anti-valve attitude a bit, since even if you earned an item with the idler and did get it legit via an achievement, you're okay.

Also, I've been banned for wearing my Halo on servers, as well as not being healed by medics that see me with a halo, anyone else run into that?

The group I mentioned above claims to be refusing to heal people wearing halos.

The TF2 section of the SPUF forums really show what people are made of. The number of idiotic admins who threaten to BAN players for wearing a Halo are insane. Hell, there's even a few who have banned players for NOT having a Halo on believing they were one of those people who tried to cheat the system.

                        It's a freaking mess.

Hence Valve screwing up big this time.

Could they REALLY have not foreseen any of this?

How exactly did Valve screw up here? It's the mentality of those who cheated the system in the first place that is blowing this out of proportion.

Exactly. Last thing I want is Valve giving in to these retards.

Although I think Valve is quite harsh now, I also know that everybody who didn't use the idler, but knew full well of its existence, was secretly hoping for this to happen.
