3D Realms Shuts Down

In a rather late breaking story, 3D Realms, the developers behind the Duke Nukem series, has officially closed its doors today. The Duke Nukem Forever developer cited a lack of funding as the reason.

This closure affects both 3D Realms and their recently revived Apogee branding. Employees under both headings have been let go.
The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee name. Employees of both entities have already been let go.

Phone calls and e-mails to various 3D Realms veterans have thus far gone unanswered, with publishing partner Take-Two likewise unavailable for comment.
3D Realms was founded in 1987 by Scott Miller and George Broussard. The studio had infamously been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.

Yes, we've all been waiting 13 years for the release of Duke Nukem Forever. With this closure, the long-awaited title may never be released. How's that for a slap to the face for everyone?

Yeah, well, if they weren't so stupid they would have released the game years ago and made some money, and then started work on something else, and finished that, and sold that, and started on something else, and finished that, and sold that...

I agree with you, but again you can't always rush a product, but again 13 years of dev. is kinda hard if your not making money and have to pay people. Personally I'm really sad to see the door close, but kinda had a feeling it was going to close someday. Maybe someone will finish of DNF or maybe they will release something out.

Thirteen years to develop !!!ONE!!! game and have nothing to show for it is criminally stupid. Entire operating systems are developed from scratch in less time. If I worked at 3DRealms I would be embarrassed to mention it.

Sometimes I wonder how it could possibly take that long. 13 years is a pretty long time for a game.
