1UP spent a good amount of time getting to better know Battlefield Heroes, inside and out. Despite it's "cartoony" visuals, does the Heroes game have what it takes to satisfy the hardcore Battlefield community?
If you're dying to get into the beta earlier than little Timmy down the street, don't forget that MyIS still has a special still going on for server rentals. While the game is free to play for clients, those clients will need a server to play on. Pre-order a server right now and you can still get 10% off of the server rental plus 16 free early-access beta keys to distribute however you see fit.
The game is still in closed beta, but the team at DICE is working on introducing more maps (currently, only three are open) and clan support. But one aspect that may or may not change is the game's single gameplay mode. Your team starts each round with 50 cumulative lives. When you get killed, that number goes down by one (though capturing flags earns your entire team a multiplier on kills). The first team to run out of lives loses the match.
While it's fun, I'm not totally convinced that it's easy enough to jump into for the casual players that EA seems to be courting with the license. And, as Shawn Elliot pointed out in his preview, the Battlefield series historically has problems with gameplay balancing. But plenty of time remains to work out those bugs. The open beta is set to go live this summer, so soon everyone will get a chance to try Heroes and see if EA's business model (and DICE's character balancing) are enough to get them hooked.
