Team Fortress 2 Turns RPG-esque In the Next Few Months

Well, that sure seems like that's going to be the case with some of the upcoming changes mentioned in PC Gamer for Team Fortress 2. Along with the new achievements, there will be new items and abilities for all classes, starting with the Medic.

The Medic will now have an item that can permanently double the health capacity of one target. Dubbed the Overhealer, this new item will be offset with a longer Uber charge time, or the removal of the Uber for this item all together.

Another caveat of being able to use this new item is that the player must earn at least half of the 35 new achievements planned for the Medic. Oh yes, there will be a second unlock that Valve is working on that comes when someone obtains all of the 35 new achievements. No details on this new item are available yet.

Supposedly, you will not be able to select your extra item on the fly. Hopefully this will be done only in the character selection screen. Expect to see a lot of servers populated with Medics once this update hits.

Goldrush is the name of the second of two new maps set to be released for Team Fortress 2 in the near future. Think of this new map as being a VIP-Lite in that one team must escort a mine cart from area to area. Set up much as Dustbowl is, with a segmented map style, the new mode will certainly test your teamwork abilities.

The Blue team must stick near the cart to get it rolling along the track. The more Blue team members there are near it, the faster it'll move. If there's a Red team member near the cart, it'll stop moving just the same as if there were zero Blue members near it. Think of this as a CP map with a perpetually moving capture point.

PC Gamer has promised that there would be more details in next month's issue, but if you want it straight from the horse's mouth this month, pick up the latest issue of PC Gamer which should be on news stands now.

Feels like the COD4 system where you can change weapons when not on a server, and change class when on the server. Whatever works, I guess.

Hard to understand exactly how things will go with unlocks, not a whole lot of info. But this map sounds like a great idea.

Nonononoo. Now if i get owned on the server I know that I suck. After this update I know that enemy had better equipmets because he plays tf2 24/7 and I don't.

Please no any rgp shit to this game.

Jesus Valve likes screwing their multiplayer games up. TF2 is perfect as it is, just needs more maps. The first version of every Valve game is always the best. Then they mess with it, aka CS, DoD, into something worse.

Valve didn't make CS or DoD they were mods that they bought. and the changes they made to CS after acquiring it were great. 1.6 is much better then the beta versions.

Oh yeah I'm sure ONE game mode for ONE map will ruin the entire game to the ground. Do you have any idea how fucking stupid you are?

                The game mode sounds cool.

It's the unlockable weapons that sound like it'll mess things up. As someone said earlier, it'll no longer be purely skill/teamwork, now it'll be who's played more and unlocked more than someone else.

So, for those saying that these unlocks will greatly unbalance the game, you do realize it's even stated that there will be counter balances to this already in place.
Dubbed the Overhealer, this new item will be offset with a longer Uber charge time, or the removal of the Uber for this item all together.

How does this change make the game more RPG-esque than it already is? This sounds only a little different than the battlefield series with the multiple kits, and that was nowhere near an 'rpg'.

The whole "he's allowed to do something I can't do just because he's played more" concept is an okay concept for a game in my opinion, it worked fine enough for Battlefield, but it does change the style of the game. Unbalance is not the only form of 'ruin'.

I'm reserving my own judgment as far as whether it will impact the game positively or negatively, I was just defending Zero from meow. What I don't like is being forced to try to earn those achievements, some of which are kind of wacky. I prefer my achievements to reflect my play style, not to be something I actively seek out to, well, achieve. *shrugs* I can adapt, I guess.

This would be the appropriate time to cross your fingers hoping that Valve will not break the game.

Hopefully these additions will only balance the classes out more and add "spice" to the gameplay. Nothing more.

Change is scary. I prefer stagnation.

I still maintain that Dynamic Weapon Pricing would be a fun feature if only they cared enough to try to make it actually work. The ability for admins to just give $16k whenever they feel like it, or other mods that give money for losing/winning/killing/knifing/whatever...

They need like a 'pure' mode, that's either mod-free, or only mods that don't impact the game (like just for keeping stats or whatever). And pure mode could only be run on official maps, and then have a larger portion of official maps, and release some new ones.

Or something. It could work, it's just that Valve doesn't care enough to make it work. If they ever do anything major to CS:S again, it'll probably be to put ads in it.
