DirectX 10 Was a Mistake; PS3 Orange Delayed

Along the lines of the Gabe slap fest yesterday, comes an extended word from Mr. Newell himself. This time, it's all about the hate-hate relationship with DirectX 10.

Here's just one paragraph that essentially summarizes everything you need to know.
The Half-Life 2 Orange Box, which will be released for PC and Xbox 360 on 12. October, uses DirectX 10 functionality only for accelerating some mimics. Visually, however, it was virtually impossible to differentiate between the versions. The PS3 edition is being developed by an EA studio and is scheduled for release two to three weeks later.
Take a moment to drink that all in.

It's list time. Here's a list of what other bits of information are contained in the article:
    • PS3 version delayed by two to three weeks

    • DX10 is in with the Orange Box titles, but only for better performance

    • There will be additional bundles online if you do not wish to re-purchase games you already own

    • A newer, smoother AA will be in use in the Orange Box titles

    • Multi-core support coming

    • The console versions will run at 720p native

    • HL2 and Episode 1 will have the engine's graphical updates added in, but only on the console versions

          ..But only for consoles?

That's not like Valve to favour console over PC.

Yeah that is odd and kinda sucks i guess but they're most likely doing it to maintain the system specs for their old games rather than favoring consoles or whatever.

You know how there's the optional thing you can install to add the 'hi-definition pack' to HL1 in steam?

There should be some kind of optional thing to update the quality of HL2 to add HDR, as well as all this other stuff they're doing to improve graphics and stuff. Then they wouldn't have to worry about adjusting system requirements.

EA for the consoles? Great, console versions are screwed then.

wouldnt think that adding HRD to all HL2 maps is an easy task.. they are just cutting down on their work so to keep up.. and apparently they cant keep up thats why EA is taking a piece of it..

It's not HDR, but there's a fan-made high-def texture pack for HL2 that's pretty nice, but if you value smooth framerates I wouldn't recommend it unless you've got 256mb of video memory... there's a lot of big textures in there. Still, it definitely kicks the game up a notch in visual quality.

My only other thought with th multi-core stuff is that it's controlled hardware for the console systems, where there's more variance in the PC market. It's possible they're still working out bugs that can affect the funny configurations possible in the PC world, or perhaps they just want to go big and separate that release from the hype of the Orange Box.

EA is doing the PS3 version only IIRC.

If it's already done, for the consoles, seems to me like it wouldn't be that hard to add it to PC's, too. These graphical updates have already been made, the only work left is in making it patch over the previous version for PC's. That can't be all that hard, so I'm betting the biggest reason is because there's no monetary incentive for them to do so or they don't want to change system requirements.
