    Norton Screws Up Counter-Strike

    It seems as though the latest update to Norton Anti-virus, and other Symantec based anti-virus programs, has led to some users not being able to play Counter-Strike: Source. Don't panic though, there's no trojan or virus within Steam or Counter-Strike. Instead this is a result of the anti-virus program falsely reporting a problem where there is none.

    Valve has contacted Symantec and a resolution should be rolled out by Symantec within a few days. Until an update is released, a temp solution is to disable Norton when you wish to play.

    I would personally suggest ditching Symantec products completely and using another anti-virus. However, I may be a bit jaded after a couple of horrible experiences with the company's products.

    I don't keep a full-time virus shield. When I leave AVG open, it will auto-scan early in the morning, but I often turn it off, because I usually know enough to stay out of the way of sketchy websites, products, etc.

    I used Avast for a while, but quickly became irritated at its continuous hogging. Might've been a configuration thing, but meh.

      What do you mean by continuous hogging?

        You could right-click the Avast! icon and Stop the processes while you play... remembering to re-enable them after you quit CS.

              Odd. I've found Avast to have a very minuscule footprint. Far smaller than anything Norton could release.

                I've always told people to ditch Norton.

                Fact : ALL the friends/family computers I've ever had to clean up because they where infected were running Norton...

                Norton = t3h suXor!

                  Every anti-virus program is as useless as the next one.

                        A Norton update you say? Funny, I didn't experience the problem until Steam updated, not Symantec AV. Don't you go fear mongering, now....

                          Steam hasn't updated since June 27th. Norton updated July 7th, the day that these troubles began.

                            Don't you just hate it when the facts destroy all counter-arguments? Takes the fun right out of things -- now we have nothing to debate. :P

                              yay I was waiting for this to appear on the front page :) thanks Zips

                              All you have to do is disable auto-protect before entering the game and then re-enable it after joining, but everyone is making such a big deal out of it.

                              And yes, it sucks that we can't debate anymore :)
