    Brand new Source Engine Beta

Valve is just busting out the Source engine BETA's left and right. Here's the current change log and instructions on how to participate will follow.
    • Fixed VAC icon not showing up in server browser

    • Fixed the buy favorites commands not working (needed FCVAR_CLIENTCMD_CAN_EXECUTE on certain commands)

    • Made record and stop use FCVAR_CLIENTCMD_CAN_EXECUTE

    • Made wait FCVAR_SERVER_CAN_EXECUTE

    • Enhanced sv_pure's output

    • Fixed delay when disconnecting from a server

    • Fixed a Day of Defeat: Source crash

    • Made demos record screenshot/jpeg commands and added a cvar cl_playback_screenshots to control whether or not the screenshot/jpeg commands are replayed while playing back a demo

    • Fixed the add/remove/edit/import buttons in the dedicated server's Bans panel missing

    • For Linux the beta should also address the 100% CPU on the new thread when running multi-core on newer GLIBC versions.
If you're interested in participating in the BETA, run hldsupdatetool with the command "-beta src0625".

Most of the things they put in these BETAs have been fixes or just tiny little tweaks or optional additions that really, could go right into the actual game and not need a BETA.

BETAs shoudl be reserved for things that really do need hard testing before being released to the mass public. There's no point having a BETA for "hey we fixed this bug... uh... let's pointlessly test it now even though we know it works already".

Release the fixes straight to the main game. For the optional stuff, well, it's fucking optional, add it in too and if people don't like it they can turn it off. All fo this constant BETA shit is pissing me off.

No, a beta for most everything is needed. These pre-release opportunities have been what server admins have been begging for, for quite some time.

So no, something "small" like this can't just be integrated into an update, because if something goes horribly wrong there's going to be a ton of upset admins clamoring asking why no BETA was given to them to test it first.

I agree, it is something, and a step in the right direction.

But I still think there are more important issues at hand that should be addressed first.

It's possible that they are working on the important issues and the smaller bugs and then updating as they get them finished. But who knows

Man, I remember this guy that was on the forums that just begged and begged (and whined and whined) that every single release should come with a beta first.

I think Zips (or some other moderater) eventually banned him for crossing the line.

I agreed with his concept but figured Valve just wouldn't do it. Guess I was proven wrong. =P

Now for them to fix the Report Bug feature... I tried using the Report Bug feature to report the bug with the Report Bug feature, but the bug wasn't reported. -.-

If I was still on the Steam forums, I'd make that my new signature.

If you haven't noticed, they stopped with gameplay updates for cs:s, dod:s & co a long time ago. According to the update news in Steam, the last noticable cs:s update was on December 11, 2006, and August 18, 2006 for dod:source.

They are only updating the engine because it's the same thing that will run under their new shiny title: team fortress two. Consider cs:s as a finished product, it will only get small fixes like 1.6 did after the release of cs:s.

                      Does 1.6 still have bugs?

I found one! It's this bug that shows these ugly square advertising. They're also on the scoreboard!
